Is Google Fi worth it?

Google Fi is fundamentally different from every other provider on this list. It is not a travel eSIM - it is a full-service US mobile carrier that happens to include excellent international roaming. For US residents, it replaces your entire phone plan with a service that works seamlessly in 200+ countries.

The Flexible plan starts at $20/month with data billed at $10 per GB, capping at $60 for unlimited usage. This works well for months when you barely use data, but the per-GB rate is expensive compared to dedicated travel eSIMs.

The Simply Unlimited plan at $50/month includes 22GB of high-speed data. Unlimited Plus at $55/month bumps that to 35GB and adds 25GB of hotspot data. Unlimited Premium at $65/month provides 50GB of high-speed data and 50GB of hotspot.

All unlimited plans include international data roaming in 200+ destinations at full speed. Compared to a dedicated travel eSIM, Google Fi is more expensive for data alone. The biggest limitation of Google Fi is also the most absolute: you must be a US resident to sign up. You need a US shipping address, a US-issued payment method, and the service must be primarily used within the United States. Google monitors usage patterns, and accounts that spend extended periods abroad (generally beyond 90 days of continuous international roaming) may receive warnings or have international features limited.

This makes Google Fi excellent for US residents who travel frequently but always return home, and unsuitable for expats, long-term nomads, or anyone without US residency. If you spend more time abroad than at home, a dedicated travel eSIM provider with no residency requirements is the better option. Google Fi is a travel perk attached to a US phone plan, not a standalone travel product.
