The best eSIM for New Caledonia
A French territory in the South Pacific. Here is the plan we would pick today, the live pricing for every plan we track, and the practical things to know before you fly.
The lowest price-per-gigabyte we currently track for New Caledonia. A solid fit for most one-to-two-week trips with maps, messaging, and the occasional photo upload.
Prices are live and may change. Google Fi is excluded from the value ranking because it is a full phone plan rather than a travel data plan.
Nouméa
- Arriving
- La Tontouta International (NOU) is about 45 km from Nouméa; transfers are by the Navette airport shuttle or a taxi. The airport has 4G from Mobilis. New Caledonia is a French territory but is not covered by EU roaming, so verify your plan or buy a local SIM. Data costs more than mainland France but less than many Pacific neighbours.
- On the subway and rail
- Nouméa moves by Tanéo buses and taxis; the Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons beach districts and the centre are walkable. There is no metro. Coverage holds across the capital and the southern Grande Terre roads. The interior mountains and outer islands thin out.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels, the malls and the cafes around Anse Vata and the Place des Cocotiers provide WiFi. NOU airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is easy across the capital, a supplement to the cellular data.
- Coverage in the city
- Mobilis (the OPT network) runs 4G across Nouméa, the centre, Anse Vata and the Baie des Citrons. As a French territory not in EU roaming, a local Mobilis SIM or a plan that explicitly includes New Caledonia is needed. Coverage thins quickly outside the capital and on the interior roads.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Mobilis sells SIMs at NOU and in Nouméa. Most European eSIM plans exclude the French Pacific territories, so confirm coverage specifically or buy a local Mobilis SIM for the trip.
ÃŽle des Pins
- Arriving
- Île des Pins (ILP) takes flights from Nouméa, with the Betico ferry as the alternative; transfers on the island are by taxi or with the gîtes. The island has 4G from Mobilis at the main areas. As across New Caledonia, EU roaming does not apply, so arrange a local SIM or a covering plan.
- On the subway and rail
- ÃŽle des Pins is a small island toured by taxi, bicycle and boat; the main village is Vao. There is no public transit. Coverage holds at Vao and the resort areas; the Oro Bay natural pool and the boat excursions hold signal at the main sites, thinning in the quieter coves.
- Free public WiFi
- Le Méridien Île des Pins and the smaller gîtes provide guest WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated around Vao and the resort areas, with WiFi the main supplement at the beaches.
- Coverage in the city
- Mobilis runs 4G at Vao village and the resort areas of ÃŽle des Pins. The famous Piscine Naturelle (natural pool) at Oro Bay and the Kuto and Kanumera bays are covered at the main access points; the longer cliff walks and quieter coves thin out.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Buy a Mobilis SIM in Nouméa before flying or sailing over, as island outlets are limited. New Caledonia is outside EU roaming, so confirm any eSIM covers it specifically; the resort WiFi covers a good deal of a stay.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in New Caledonia to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
New Caledonia is a French territory in the South Pacific with better connectivity than most Pacific island nations. OPT (Office des Postes et Telecommunications) operates the Mobilis network, providing 4G LTE coverage in Noumea, along the main coastal roads of Grande Terre, and in larger towns. The infrastructure benefits from French investment, making it more developed than many neighboring island nations.
However, the interior mountains of Grande Terre and the Loyalty Islands (Mare, Lifou, Ouvea) have more limited coverage. The Isle of Pines has basic service in the main village area. As a French territory, some European eSIM plans might include New Caledonia, but most do not - verify before traveling. Data costs are higher than mainland France but lower than many other Pacific destinations.
- Check whether your European eSIM plan covers New Caledonia - most exclude French Pacific territories
- Noumea has reliable 4G but coverage thins outside the capital
- Download offline maps for road trips around Grande Terre's interior
- The Loyalty Islands have basic coverage in main villages only
- Wi-Fi at hotels and resorts is generally reliable as a backup

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the New Caledonia eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for New Caledonia.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
