Flexible data-only usage examples for an existing eligible subscriber: one line, one billing cycle, no other data use, and no optional full-speed purchase. These are not standalone travel packages; 30 days is an illustration, not purchased validity. Ordinary data costs $10/GB up to $60 after 6GB. The required $20/month service base, taxes, fees and other charges are separate ($80 combined base and ordinary data at the cap, before extras). Group Bill Protection thresholds differ. Domestic and overseas data share the cycle: prior usage can reduce the incremental data charge; crossing billing cycles changes the total.

After 15GB per member in a billing cycle, speeds slow to 256kbps. Restoring full speed is optional and costs an additional $10/GB for the rest of that cycle; it is not included in the $60 ordinary-data cap.

Requires US residency, initial US activation, primarily US use and an active voice subscription in good standing. Activate and use service, including new SIMs and devices, in the US for at least one day before travel. Extended roaming can lead to international-data suspension; no 90-day allowance is guaranteed. Check destination coverage with Fi; the existing coverage list was not reverified by this shared pricing review.

Google Fi is a US phone plan that roams. A travel eSIM is a prepaid data pack. Compare them as those two things, not as two eSIM stores.

The short answer, by traveler type

Eight common situations. Fi is a yes only when the thing you need is a US phone plan that also works abroad.

US resident who needs voice and SMS abroad
Fi, yes
That is the product: a US number that keeps working. A travel eSIM is data-only.
Light traveler (a little data, occasional trips)
Maybe Flexible
One-line Flexible: $20 base plus up to $60 ordinary data, before taxes, fees and extras.
Data-heavy trip
Travel eSIM for data
Compare the $60 ordinary-data cap with travel bundles. Speeds slow after 15GB unless you pay extra to restore full speed.
Frequent short trips
Often Fi
Landing and having the number, texts, and a usable data path without buying a pack each time.
Extended use abroad
No as primary
Fi must be used primarily in the US. Do not treat it as a long-stay home plan.
Non-US resident
No
US residency, US address, and US payment method are required. Buy a travel eSIM instead.
Cruise / at sea
No (GigSky)
Fi is land roaming. At-sea cellular is a GigSky problem, not a Fi problem.
iPhone hotspot abroad
Check first
Hotspot is part of Flexible, Unlimited Standard and Unlimited Premium, but Fi does not say plan by plan whether it works abroad. Fi's iOS help lists Personal Hotspot APN h2g2-t for iOS 16.3 or lower. Compare data costs using your cycle usage, Bill Protection and required hotspot speeds.

Fi data caps at $60 per cycle for one line, excluding base and extras, with speeds reduced after 15GB unless optional full speed is purchased. Best-$/GB rows are each country's plan with the lowest price per GB (1 GB or more); entry-sample rows are the cheapest plan with at least 1 GB — not the best rate in that country. From the weekly provider feeds, read Oct 19, 2026 or later. Destination pages linked for Canada, India, Japan, and Thailand.

Those rates are why a data-heavy week in Thailand or India should not run on Fi data. The same table is why a light Flexible month can still be rational if what you are buying is the US plan, not the gigabytes. For a trip-shaped total, use the cost calculator.

Google Fi plans and what each covers abroad

One-line prices from Google Fi's plans page, checked October 21, 2026, before taxes and fees; multi-line prices differ. Since April 2025, Unlimited Standard replaces Simply Unlimited and Unlimited Premium replaces Unlimited Plus. Flexible is the only tier that bills $10/GB. The unlimited tiers trade a higher monthly base for a high-speed bucket. None of these is a one-trip SKU. Details and the residency rule live on the Fi provider page.

Scenario math: monthly plan vs one trip

Four ways the same $10/GB rate shows up in real trips. We only use real plans from the weekly provider feeds and the Fi menu; nothing is invented.

A. Europe, about 10 GB, one trip

If you do not already live on Fi, do not open a US phone plan for a single Europe trip. One-line Flexible costs $80 for base plus 10GB ordinary data in one billing cycle, before taxes, fees and extras. The cheapest UK travel plan we list with at least 10 GB is Virgin Connect 10 GB / 30 days · $9.50. For your exact trip, use the cost calculator and plan finder.

B. Keep the number, buy data (dual-SIM)

This is the dual-SIM case: Fi remains the default voice and SMS line so banks, 2FA, and callers still hit your US number. Cellular data moves to the travel eSIM. The incremental cost of the trip's data is the travel plan, not $10/GB. Same pattern on Canada, India, Japan, or Thailand.

C. Light month on Flexible

Light travelers who want one US bill and only sip data can stay on Flexible and skip a travel eSIM. The moment the trip looks like 50 GB in Canada or India, compare Fi's capped charge and reduced speeds with the travel option in scenario B.

D. Heavy Canada or India

Head-to-heads if you want the rest of the product comparison, not just the rate: Google Fi vs Nomad, Google Fi vs GoMoWorld, Google Fi vs Saily.

Fi-only, Fi plus a travel eSIM, or skip Fi

Three setups. Pick one on purpose so the phone does not pick roaming for you.

Fi-only is enough when
  • You are a US resident who needs voice and SMS on a real US number
  • Trips are frequent and short, and buying a pack every time is the hassle
  • One-line Flexible suits your usage: $20 base plus capped ordinary data, taxes, fees and extras
  • You already pay for Unlimited Premium and the trip fits its 50 GB of high-speed data abroad
Skip Fi (or do not start it) when
  • You are not a US resident
  • Your primary use would be outside the US
  • The trip is a cruise or at-sea itinerary (GigSky, not Fi)
  • You only need one-trip data and do not want a US phone plan

The dual-SIM middle: Fi plus a travel eSIM

Use this when Fi is already your US plan (you want the number) and the trip is data-heavy enough that $10/GB hurts. Fi stays on for voice and SMS. A travel eSIM carries data. That is the same pattern as any home line plus a travel pack — Fi is just the home line. If you need hotspot abroad, pick a travel plan that allows tethering and share its data instead of Fi's.

  1. Leave Fi as the default voice and SMS line

Outbound calls, iMessage / FaceTime, and bank texts stay on the US number. Do not move default voice onto the travel eSIM.

  2. Set the travel eSIM as the cellular data line

All maps, apps, and hotspot traffic should ride the travel plan. Install it at home on Wi-Fi; the setup guide is the order that works.

  3. Turn Data Roaming OFF on Fi

If Fi roaming stays on, a weak travel-eSIM signal can still pull $10/GB. This is the expensive toggle.

  4. Turn Data Roaming ON for the travel eSIM

Travel eSIMs route as roaming on a local carrier. The line needs roaming enabled even though you prepaid.

  5. Turn Allow Cellular Data Switching OFF

On iPhone this is the silent-roaming trap. With it on, iOS falls back to Fi when the travel line dips. Off means you stay on the travel eSIM. Walkthrough: eSIM on iPhone.

Common Google Fi vs travel eSIM questions

The category error first, then the plan math and the dual-SIM toggles.

Is Google Fi a travel eSIM?

No. Google Fi is a US mobile phone plan with international roaming. It is not a data-only travel eSIM. You keep a US number, voice, and SMS. Travel eSIMs from Nomad, GoMoWorld, Saily, and the rest are prepaid data packs you buy for a trip.

Can a non-US resident sign up for Google Fi?

No. Fi requires US residency, a US shipping address, and a US-issued payment method. Service must be activated and primarily used in the United States. If you do not live in the US, skip Fi and buy a travel eSIM.

Why does Fi cost $10 per GB abroad?

Can I keep Fi for my number and use a travel eSIM for data?

Yes. That dual-SIM setup is often the smarter play on a data-heavy trip. Leave Fi as the default voice and SMS line, set the travel eSIM as cellular data, turn Data Roaming off on Fi, turn Data Roaming on for the travel eSIM, and turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off so the iPhone does not silently roam on Fi.

Does Google Fi hotspot work on iPhone abroad?

Check before you rely on it. Hotspot comes with Flexible, Unlimited Standard (up to 25 GB of its high-speed data) and Unlimited Premium (up to 50 GB), not Unlimited Essentials, but Fi does not say plan by plan whether hotspot works abroad. Abroad, only Flexible and Unlimited Premium have data outside Canada and Mexico. Fi's iOS help lists Personal Hotspot APN h2g2-t for iOS 16.3 or lower. If hotspot matters on the trip, a travel eSIM that allows tethering is the safer data line.

Will Google Fi work on a cruise or at sea?

No as a cruise play. Fi is land roaming on a US phone plan. For at-sea cellular, GigSky is the travel-eSIM exception we point to. Compare Fi and GigSky directly if you want the side-by-side, but do not treat Fi as ship coverage.

What happens during extended use abroad?

Requires US residency, initial US activation, primarily US use and an active voice subscription in good standing. Activate and use service, including new SIMs and devices, in the US for at least one day before travel. Extended roaming can lead to international-data suspension; no 90-day allowance is guaranteed. Check destination coverage with Fi; the existing coverage list was not reverified by this shared pricing review.

What is the Google Fi referral code and credit?

New customers who sign up with referral code DR48NH can receive a $60 Fi bill credit after activating a full-service plan, keeping service active for 30 consecutive days, and paying the first bill in full. The credit applies to monthly service costs.

Should I switch to Fi just for one Europe trip?

For one line, 10GB in one billing cycle costs $60 for ordinary data plus the $20 base, before taxes, fees and extras. Existing subscribers should compare incremental usage with their current cycle. Fi requires US residency, US activation and primarily US use; it is not a standalone travel package.

Which Fi plan if I travel a few times a year?

Frequent short trips are where Fi often wins: the number, voice, and SMS just work when you land. Light months can stay on Flexible ($20 base plus up to $60 ordinary data per billing cycle for one line, before extras). For data-heavy trips, compare capped Fi charges and speed limits with a travel eSIM.

How we built this page

What is in this guide, what is not, and how we get paid.

Travel-eSIM prices here come from the weekly provider feeds behind our destination pages (read Oct 19, 2026 or later), not from this Flexible pricing review: best per GB — Canada Roamless 50 GB / 30 days · $49.95; India GoMoWorld 45 GB / 30 days · $35.99; Japan Nomad 50 GB / 30 days · $35.00; Thailand Nomad 50 GB / 10 days · $15.00; entry samples — United Kingdom GigSky 1 GB / 7 days · $2.99; France GigSky 1 GB / 7 days · $2.99; Mexico GigSky 1 GB / 7 days · $2.99; Australia Virgin Connect 1 GB / 7 days · $3.00; and, for the scenarios, the cheapest UK plan with 10 GB or more and the cheapest Canada and India plans with 50 GB or more. Rate ratios alone do not measure savings against Fi because Bill Protection caps ordinary data and speeds slow after 15GB.

Flexible pricing and eligibility were reviewed October 10, 2026 using the official sources above. The plan lineup and hotspot allowances were checked October 21, 2026 on Google Fi's plans and help pages; the referral offer was not re-checked. More context is in our Google Fi review. Google Fi does not have a Trustpilot profile we can score — it is a US carrier, not a travel-eSIM storefront, and we do not display a Trustpilot chip for it.

BetterSIM uses affiliate links, including travel-eSIM checkouts and the Fi path on our provider page. Commissions do not change the $10/GB rate, the travel prices in the table, or the traveler-type calls. The compare templates on this site still introduce some pairs as “two travel eSIMs” or “data-only” even when one side is Fi; this guide does not repeat that label, and we are not rewriting those compare pages here.
