Prices are live and may change. Google Fi is excluded from the value ranking because it is a full phone plan rather than a travel data plan.
Mascom (the dominant carrier, MTN-affiliated), Orange Botswana and beMobile (the state carrier) all run 4G across central Gaborone, the CBD and the Phakalane suburb. Mascom has the widest 4G footprint nationally.
Maun town has functional 4G across all carriers. The mokoro boat trips into the delta and the overnight bush camps lose signal entirely; even the airstrip transfers to the deeper Delta camps fly into reliably offline territory.
Kasane town and the main Chobe river-front lodges have functional Mascom signal. Game drives into the Serondela area and the longer boat cruises on the Chobe River stay connected close to the lodges; deeper park interiors thin.
The Kalahari is essentially offline. The few permanent camps have satellite Wi-Fi for emergencies; the drives across the salt pans and the longer self-drive routes from Maun or Ghanzi see no cellular coverage at all.
Kubu Island, the Nxai Pan camps and the iconic baobab tree areas (Baines' Baobabs) are offline. Even Mascom thins to nothing on the salt-pan crossings; treat the pans as multi-day disconnect territory.
Maun-Shakawe road has signal at the larger settlements. The Tsodilo Hills rock-art UNESCO site itself has functional coverage at the visitor area; the longer treks across the hills thin out.
Gaborone
- Arriving
- Sir Seretse Khama International (GBE) is a short ride from Gaborone; transfers are by taxi. The airport has 4G from Mascom, Orange and beMobile. Botswana is included in some Africa regional eSIM plans. Gaborone is the capital and the main entry point for the south.
- On the subway and rail
- Gaborone moves by combi minibuses and taxis; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the capital, the CBD and the Phakalane suburb. The drive out to the airport and along the main A1 highway stays connected.
- Free public WiFi
- The malls (Game City, Riverwalk) and the hotels provide WiFi. GBE airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is reliable across the capital.
- Coverage in the city
- Mascom (the dominant, MTN-affiliated carrier), Orange Botswana and beMobile all run 4G across central Gaborone, the CBD and Phakalane. Mascom has the widest national footprint. The safari areas to the north are where coverage drops; Gaborone itself is well covered.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Mascom, Orange and beMobile sell SIMs at GBE and in the malls, with Mascom the widest. An Africa regional eSIM that includes Botswana is convenient; a local SIM works for the cities and main roads.
Maun
- Arriving
- Maun Airport (MUB) is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, with bush flights to the camps; transfers are by taxi or safari transfer. The airport and town have functional 4G across all carriers. Maun is the safari hub; download offline maps, as the Delta itself is offline.
- On the subway and rail
- Maun moves by combis, taxis and safari transfers, with light aircraft to the Delta camps; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the town. The mokoro trips into the Okavango Delta and the bush camps lose signal entirely.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels, lodges and the cafes in Maun provide WiFi. MUB airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the town; the Delta camps run on satellite WiFi where available.
- Coverage in the city
- Mascom, Orange and beMobile all run 4G across Maun town. The Okavango Delta beyond is essentially offline: the mokoro routes, the overnight bush camps and even the airstrip transfers fly into reliably no-signal territory. Treat the Delta as a disconnect.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Mascom, Orange and beMobile sell SIMs at MUB and in Maun, with Mascom the widest. An Africa regional eSIM works in town; whichever you choose, expect to be offline once you enter the Delta.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Botswana to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Botswana has good mobile connectivity in its urban areas relative to the region. Mascom, Orange, and beMobile provide 4G LTE in Gaborone, Francistown, and Maun. The main road network between cities generally maintains functional coverage, making road trips between destinations feasible for connected travelers.
However, Botswana's famous wildlife areas present connectivity challenges. The Okavango Delta has no cellular coverage in most of the delta - safari camps rely on satellite for communication. Chobe National Park has coverage in Kasane town but not within the park itself. The Makgadikgadi Pans and Central Kalahari are also offline. For safari travelers, embrace the disconnection as part of the wilderness experience.
- Gaborone and Maun have reliable 4G coverage
- No cellular coverage in the Okavango Delta or most national parks
- Safari camps use satellite communication - ask about guest Wi-Fi
- Mascom has the widest coverage network in Botswana
- Download all maps and guides before entering any game reserve or national park

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Botswana eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Botswana.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Botswana recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
