Prices are live and may change. Google Fi is excluded from the value ranking because it is a full phone plan rather than a travel data plan.
Econet Leo, Lumitel and Smart Mobile all run 3G/4G across central Bujumbura, the lakefront and the Rohero diplomatic district. Lumitel (Vietnam-Burundi joint venture) has the widest 4G availability in the city.
The Saga Beach resort strip, Resha and the Rumonge fishing villages south of Bujumbura have functional signal at the populated coast. Boat trips out onto the lake itself stay connected close to shore.
Gitega city, the National Museum and the Drummers of Burundi cultural centre have basic 2G/3G with patches of 4G. The drive on the RN1 from Bujumbura to Gitega has signal at the main villages; the hills between thin out.
The park gateway villages of Teza and Bugarama have basic signal. Inside the rainforest, the chimpanzee tracking trails and the deeper Congo-Nile divide ridges run on satellite radio and lodge generators only.
The park entrance near Bujumbura has functional 4G; the hippo and crocodile boat tours on the Rusizi delta stay close to a tower. The Kibira-edge villages on the DRC border have intermittent service.
The southernmost source of the Nile monument at Rutovu and the surrounding hilly tea-plantation roads have very basic coverage. The deeper Burundi-Tanzania border valleys are essentially offline.
Bujumbura
- Arriving
- Bujumbura International (BJM) is a short ride from the city; transfers are by taxi. The airport has 3G/4G from Econet Leo, Lumitel and Smart Mobile. Bujumbura, on Lake Tanganyika, has the only reliable data coverage in the country. Check current advisories, and download offline maps before leaving the capital.
- On the subway and rail
- Bujumbura moves by minibuses and taxis; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the central districts and the lakefront. Hotel WiFi is the most reliable internet option, with the surrounding hills and the interior dropping signal quickly.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels in the Rohero diplomatic district and the lakefront cafes provide WiFi, generally more reliable than cellular. BJM airport has basic WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the capital.
- Coverage in the city
- Econet Leo, Lumitel and Smart Mobile run 3G/4G across central Bujumbura, the lakefront and the Rohero district, with Lumitel (the Vietnam-Burundi venture) the widest in the city. The Saga Beach resort strip south of town is covered. The interior and Gitega thin out quickly.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Econet Leo, Lumitel and Smart Mobile sell SIMs in Bujumbura. Very few international eSIM providers cover Burundi, so a local SIM or hotel WiFi is the practical option; Lumitel has the widest city coverage.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Burundi to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Burundi has basic mobile connectivity in its capital. Econet Leo, Lumitel, and Smart Mobile provide 3G/4G in Bujumbura and basic 2G/3G in Gitega (the political capital) and a few secondary towns. Bujumbura's central areas along Lake Tanganyika have functional coverage for messaging.
The interior and rural areas of this small, densely populated country have very limited coverage. Kibira National Park and rural communities have minimal service. Burundi is one of the least visited countries in Africa, and eSIM coverage is extremely limited. Travelers should prepare for minimal digital connectivity outside Bujumbura.

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Burundi eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Burundi.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Burundi recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
