Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Costa Rica has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
San José and Central Valley
Excellent

Kölbi (ICE), Claro, Movistar and Liberty all run 4G with 5G appearing across San José, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago. Kölbi has the widest 4G footprint nationally and is the standard partner for most travel eSIM providers.

Pacific Coast (Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, Jacó)
Strong

The beach towns and the Costanera Sur (Route 34) highway are well covered. Surf breaks and resort areas have reliable coverage; remote beaches and side roads to Santa Teresa or Montezuma thin out, with Kölbi the most consistent.

Arenal and Northern Lowlands
Strong

La Fortuna town, the Arenal volcano viewpoints and the hot-springs corridor are fully covered. Trails into Arenal National Park and the longer drives north to Caño Negro and the Nicaragua border thin out in the deeper rainforest.

Monteverde Cloud Forest
Good

Santa Elena town and the Monteverde reserve entrance are covered. The famous hanging bridges and SkyWalk canopy walkways have signal at the entry stations; deeper trail interiors and the Children's Eternal Rainforest drop coverage.

Caribbean Coast (Puerto Viejo, Cahuita)
Good

Puerto Viejo, Cahuita and the Caribbean beach towns have functional coverage. Remote indigenous Bribri and Cabécar territories inland from Puerto Viejo see real gaps on every carrier.

Corcovado and the Osa Peninsula
Limited

Even Kölbi (the state carrier with the widest reach) struggles past Drake Bay. Corcovado National Park interior is genuinely offline; ranger stations have radio but no cell signal. Plan for the day as fully disconnected.

City-by-city connectivity in Costa Rica
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

San José

Arriving
Juan Santamaría International (SJO) is about 20 km from the centre in Alajuela; transfers are by taxi, Uber or bus. The airport has 4G with 5G from Kölbi (ICE), Claro, Movistar and Liberty. A Latin America regional eSIM works well for a Costa Rica trip combined with neighbouring countries.
On the subway and rail
San José moves by buses, taxis and the Uber and DiDi ride apps, with a commuter train (Tren Urbano) across the Central Valley; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the city and the Central Valley towns. Navigation apps are useful for the often-unnumbered streets.
Free public WiFi
The malls leave WiFi open: Multiplaza and City Mall. Cafes, the hotels and the central districts offer WiFi. SJO airport has free terminal WiFi. Hotels provide guest WiFi as standard.
Coverage in the city
Kölbi (ICE), Claro, Movistar and Liberty all run 4G with 5G across San José, Heredia, Alajuela and the Central Valley. Kölbi has the widest national footprint and is the standard partner for most travel eSIM providers. The Mercado Central, the National Theatre and the city core are all covered.
If you prefer a local SIM
Kölbi, Claro, Movistar and Liberty sell prepaid SIMs at SJO and in the malls. Kölbi has the deepest rural reach. A Latin America regional eSIM is convenient for a multi-country trip; for Costa Rica alone, a local SIM or eSIM both work.

La Fortuna (Arenal)

Arriving
San José (SJO) is about three hours away by road, with the small La Fortuna Arenal airstrip (FON) for charter hops; most visitors arrive by shuttle or private transfer. The town sits at the foot of the Arenal volcano. The carriers cover the route. Have data ready for the hot-springs and hanging-bridges logistics.
On the subway and rail
La Fortuna moves by shuttles and taxis; the town near the volcano is walkable. There is no metro or rail. Coverage holds across the town and the hot-springs corridor. The trails into Arenal National Park and the deeper rainforest thin out.
Free public WiFi
Hotels, the hot-springs resorts (Tabacón, Baldi) and the cafes provide WiFi. Connectivity is easy in town, with a working SIM or eSIM covering the volcano viewpoints and waterfall trips.
Coverage in the city
Kölbi, Claro and Movistar all cover La Fortuna town, the Arenal volcano viewpoints and the hot-springs corridor. The hanging bridges and the trails into Arenal National Park have signal at the entry stations; the deeper rainforest and the drive north to Caño Negro thin out, with Kölbi the most consistent.
If you prefer a local SIM
It is easiest to buy a Kölbi, Claro or Movistar SIM at San José airport on arrival, or use a Latin America regional eSIM. La Fortuna has carrier outlets in town. Kölbi has the best reach for the surrounding rainforest.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Costa Rica.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Costa Rica to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica delivers reliable mobile connectivity for a Central American destination. Kolbi (ICE), Movistar, and Claro provide 4G LTE in San Jose, the Central Valley, and most popular tourist areas. Beach destinations like Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and the Guanacaste coast have functional coverage, making it easy to book tours, use maps, and share photos.

Cloud forest areas like Monteverde have basic coverage in town but signal can drop on remote trails. The Osa Peninsula (Corcovado National Park) and some Caribbean coast areas like Tortuguero are more challenging - expect limited connectivity in these remote nature destinations. Costa Rica is one of the better-connected countries in Central America, and most travelers will find their eSIM works reliably across the typical tourist itinerary.

Practical Data Tips
  • Manuel Antonio and Guanacaste beach areas have reliable coverage for most carriers
  • Monteverde cloud forest has coverage in town but not deep on trails
  • Download offline maps before visiting Corcovado or Tortuguero
  • Kolbi (ICE) has the widest coverage as the national carrier
  • Data is useful for Waze (heavily used in Costa Rica) and booking last-minute tours

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Costa Rica are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Costa Rica eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

Download offline maps for Costa Rica.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
