Santo Domingo
- Arriving
- Las Américas International (SDQ) is about 30 km east of the centre. There is no rail link from the airport, so the transfer is a taxi, Uber or InDrive. All terminals have full 4G from Claro, Altice and Viva. Have data ready so the ride apps and navigation work for the run into the colonial capital.
- On the subway and rail
- Santo Domingo has the only metro in the Caribbean (two lines) with cell coverage on the platforms and tunnels, plus the OMSA buses, the Teleférico cable car over the Ozama river, the carros públicos and Uber and InDrive. The Metro and the ride apps hold data across the city. The compact Zona Colonial is best walked.
- Free public WiFi
- The malls leave WiFi open: Ágora Mall, Blue Mall and Sambil. Cafes across the Zona Colonial and the Piantini district offer WiFi. SDQ airport has free terminal WiFi. Hotels provide guest WiFi as standard, so the tourist districts are easy to stay connected in.
- Coverage in the city
- Claro has the widest footprint across Santo Domingo, with Altice and Viva present. The Zona Colonial (the oldest European-founded city in the Americas), the Malecón, Piantini and Gazcue are all covered. The Metro lines and the ride apps hold data across the city; coverage is strongest in the central and colonial districts.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Claro, Altice and Viva sell prepaid SIMs at SDQ and in the malls. Tourist data is affordable. A Caribbean regional eSIM is a good option if you are also visiting other islands; for the DR alone, a local SIM or an international eSIM both work well.
Punta Cana
- Arriving
- Punta Cana International (PUJ) is around 10 to 20 km from the Bávaro resort strip, with most arrivals connecting onward by resort shuttle or taxi. All terminals have full 4G from Claro, Altice and Viva. Have data ready for the excursion bookings; the all-inclusive resorts also provide their own WiFi.
- On the subway and rail
- Punta Cana is a resort destination served by hotel shuttles, taxis and the local guagua buses along the Bávaro Beach strip; there is no metro or rail. Boats run to Saona and Catalina islands and on catamaran trips. Coverage holds across the resort strip and the Cap Cana marina; the island boat trips lose signal offshore.
- Free public WiFi
- The all-inclusive resorts provide guest WiFi as standard, and the malls (the San Juan Shopping Center, Downtown Punta Cana) and cafes leave WiFi open. PUJ airport has free terminal WiFi. Connectivity is easy across the resort zone, with a working eSIM covering the island excursions.
- Coverage in the city
- Claro, Altice and Viva all cover the Bávaro and Punta Cana resort strip, the beaches and the Cap Cana marina. Coverage is reliable along the developed coast. The boat trips out to Saona and Catalina islands lose signal a few kilometres offshore; the islands have basic coverage at the main landing areas only.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Claro, Altice and Viva sell prepaid SIMs at PUJ and in the resort-area malls. Many guests rely on resort WiFi and skip a SIM. For excursions and transfers, a local SIM or a Caribbean regional eSIM that includes the DR is worth having.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Dominican Republic to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
The Dominican Republic offers good mobile connectivity across its popular tourist destinations. Claro, Altice, and Viva provide 4G LTE in Santo Domingo, Santiago, and the major resort areas including Punta Cana, La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Samana. The well-developed tourism infrastructure means resort areas typically have strong coverage.
Beyond the resort zones, rural mountainous areas in the Cordillera Central and some inland villages have more limited coverage. However, the main highways and coastal roads maintain reliable 4G. The DR is well-served by Caribbean and Latin America regional eSIM plans, making it a convenient destination for eSIM travelers. Data is particularly useful for navigating Santo Domingo's historic Zona Colonial and booking excursions.
- Punta Cana and major resort areas have strong, reliable coverage
- Claro has the widest coverage network across the country
- Data is useful for ride-hailing apps (InDriver, Uber) in Santo Domingo
- Download offline maps if planning mountain excursions in the Cordillera Central
- Caribbean regional eSIM plans are a good option if also visiting other islands

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Dominican Republic eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Dominican Republic.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Dominican Republic recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
