Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Egypt has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Cairo and Alexandria
Excellent

Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Misr and WE all run dense 4G with 5G appearing across central Cairo, Zamalek, Maadi and the Alexandria Corniche. Vodafone has the widest 5G footprint nationally.

Pyramids of Giza and Saqqara
Excellent

The Giza Plateau, the Sphinx complex and the Saqqara necropolis are all densely covered. Tour buses keep signal across the desert highway into the Giza site.

Nile Cruise Corridor (Luxor to Aswan)
Strong

Riverside towns from Luxor through Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan have full 4G across all carriers. The cruise boats themselves hold signal on the river except for brief drops in the longer canal sections.

Red Sea Resorts (Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, Marsa Alam)
Strong

Resort zones and the airport-resort corridors are fully covered by Vodafone and Etisalat. Diving boats out to Tiran or the southern reefs lose coverage once a few kilometres offshore.

Sinai Peninsula (Dahab, Mount Sinai, St. Catherine's)
Good

Dahab town and the St. Catherine's monastery area have functional 4G via Vodafone and Orange. The Mount Sinai climb has signal at the trailhead and summit; the desert interior between Dahab and Nuweiba thins out.

Western Desert (Siwa Oasis, Bahariya, White Desert)
Limited

Even Vodafone Egypt has long stretches of no signal across the Western Desert. Siwa town itself is covered; the dune fields, hot springs and Black Desert overnight camps are reliably offline.

City-by-city connectivity in Egypt
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Cairo

Arriving
Cairo International (CAI) has three terminals. T2 (newer, for SkyTeam and oneworld) and T3 (Star Alliance) both have full 4G/5G from Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and Etisalat Misr. No direct rail to central Cairo yet (the Monorail extension to Downtown is under construction). Shuttle bus 356 and the Airport Bus (Cairo Bus) connect to Tahrir and Heliopolis. Uber and Careem (the standard ride-hail apps) work well from arrivals. Note: many countries' eSIMs include Egypt - check coverage.
On the subway and rail
Cairo Metro has 3 lines (Line 1, 2, 3 with the new Line 3 still expanding) - all underground stations have cellular signal from Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat. The Heliopolis Metro (Light Rail) extension runs above ground and stays connected. Cairo buses (CTA) keep continuous signal on main routes. The Nile River Bus stays connected close to shore. The Egyptian National Railways train to Alexandria, Luxor and Aswan keeps signal at stations and major stops; remote desert stretches see brief drops.
Free public WiFi
Most cafes and restaurants in Zamalek, Maadi, Downtown and Garden City have open WiFi - usually the password is on the menu. CAI airport free WiFi 1 hour. Major malls (City Stars, Mall of Egypt, Mall of Arabia, Cairo Festival City) leave WiFi open. Public WiFi at the Egyptian Museum (the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza) and Pyramids visitor centre is available. Most international hotels (Nile Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Fairmont Nile City, Sofitel) offer guest WiFi.
Coverage in the city
Vodafone Egypt has the densest 4G/5G across Cairo - particularly strong in Zamalek, Maadi, Heliopolis and across the new administrative capital developments. Orange Egypt is highly competitive in Mohandessin, Dokki and the financial district at Smart Village. Etisalat is solid throughout. WE (Telecom Egypt mobile arm) covers the basics. Coverage at the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum and across Khan el-Khalili bazaar is excellent on Vodafone and Orange. The Grand Egyptian Museum (opening fully 2024-25) has purpose-built 5G coverage.
If you prefer a local SIM
Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat all have stores at CAI arrivals (all three terminals) and throughout the city. Tourist SIMs from EGP 250 with several GBs over 30 days - among the cheapest tourist SIMs in the world. Passport ID required for activation, and a fingerprint scan was introduced for new SIM activations in 2023 (legacy regulation). The eSIM route bypasses the biometric step.

Luxor

Arriving
Luxor International (LXR) handles charter flights from Europe and Egypt-domestic from Cairo. Some international flights from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, London, Milan. The airport has full 4G from all four Egyptian carriers. Taxi or pre-arranged hotel transfer to the East Bank (Luxor Temple area) is 8 km, about 15 minutes. Note: many Nile cruise itineraries either start or end at Luxor; check whether the cruise includes onboard WiFi (most do).
On the subway and rail
Luxor has no metro - everything is taxi, horse carriage (calèche), boat across the Nile to the West Bank (where the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and Colossi of Memnon are), or pre-arranged tour bus. The Egyptian National Railways Luxor station connects to Cairo (10-hour overnight sleeper) and Aswan (3-hour day train) - signal holds at stations and major stops. Hot-air balloon rides over the West Bank at dawn stay connected throughout (low altitude, near towers).
Free public WiFi
Most Luxor hotels (Winter Palace, Sofitel Old Winter Palace, Steigenberger) have guest WiFi. Cafes along the Corniche el-Nil have open WiFi. The Luxor Museum and Karnak Temple visitor centre have public WiFi at the entrance. LXR airport gives 1 hour free. Nile cruise ships now universally include onboard satellite WiFi as part of the package (speeds are modest but functional for messaging).
Coverage in the city
Vodafone Egypt has the strongest 4G/5G coverage across Luxor - particularly at Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the West Bank archaeological zones. Orange is highly competitive at the Corniche and the Old Winter Palace luxury hotel zone. Etisalat covers the basics. Coverage at the Valley of the Kings ticket area, Hatshepsut's Mortuary Temple at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon and the Ramesseum is all functional. The Nile crossing (ferry to the West Bank) stays connected. Hot-air balloon flights at sunrise hold signal at altitude.
If you prefer a local SIM
Same as Cairo - Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat have stores in Luxor on Sharia Television (Television Street) and at the airport. Most Nile cruise tour operators include a tourist SIM in their package on arrival. Tourist SIMs from EGP 250. The eSIM route is generally simpler for short stays.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Egypt.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Egypt to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Egypt.

Egypt offers solid mobile connectivity across its main tourist corridor. Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat, and WE provide 4G LTE in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, and Sharm el-Sheikh. Cairo has strong coverage across the Giza Pyramids area, downtown, and along the Nile corniche, while the resort towns on the Red Sea have excellent connectivity.

The Nile Valley tourist route between Luxor and Aswan maintains reliable coverage, including at most temple sites. Nile cruise ships generally have signal along the river. The Western Desert (White Desert, Siwa Oasis) has limited coverage except in oasis towns. The Sinai interior, apart from the resort coast, has spotty service - Mount Sinai itself has basic coverage at the base but not at the summit. Egypt is well-covered by international eSIM providers.

Practical Data Tips
  • Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan have strong coverage at all major tourist sites
  • Red Sea resorts (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh) have excellent 4G
  • Vodafone and Orange have the widest tourist area coverage
  • Data is essential for Uber/Careem in Cairo and for Google Maps navigation
  • Download offline maps before Western Desert or Sinai interior excursions

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Egypt are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Egypt eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Egypt.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
