How much data will I actually use in French Polynesia?

Most travelers buy too much data and overpay, or buy too little and have to top up. Tell us your trip and we will size the plan based on typical usage.

Idea in testingOur own eSIM · not yet available

What if it was just $5.00 a GB, everywhere?

We are considering a BetterSIM eSIM at one flat rate worldwide. No tiers, no bundles, no per-country price shopping, no volume discounts you never reach. The same $5.00 in French Polynesia as in Fiji or Kenya.

Your 4 GB would cost$20.00($5.00/GB, credit never expires)

Straight answer: this would not be the cheapest option. The plans listed on this page are often less per GB, especially in Europe and Asia. It would be the simplest. Savings against Google Fi depend on usage, Bill Protection and speed needs.

How this would work

City-by-city connectivity in French Polynesia

Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Papeete (Tahiti)

Arriving: Faa'a International (PPT) is about 5 km from Papeete; transfers are by Le Truck bus or taxi. The airport has 4G from Vini. French Polynesia is a French territory but is not covered by EU roaming, so verify your plan, and note data costs are far higher than mainland France.
On the subway and rail: Papeete moves by Le Truck buses and taxis; the waterfront and the market are walkable. There is no metro. Coverage holds across the town and the north Tahiti resort areas. Inter-island flights and ferries to Moorea and Bora Bora depart from here.
Free public WiFi: Hotels, the Marché de Papeete (the central market) and cafes provide WiFi. PPT airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is functional in town, with resort WiFi taking over on the outer islands where data is pricey.
Coverage in the city: Vini (a subsidiary of OPT) runs 4G across Papeete, the waterfront, the central market and the north Tahiti coast. As a French territory not covered by EU roaming, a local Vini SIM or a plan that explicitly includes French Polynesia is needed. The outer archipelagos drop to 3G or nothing.
If you prefer a local SIM: Vini sells SIMs at PPT and in Papeete. Most European eSIM plans exclude French Polynesia despite the French status, so confirm coverage specifically or buy a local Vini SIM. Data prices are notably higher than mainland France.

Bora Bora

Arriving: Bora Bora Airport (BOB) sits on a motu (islet), with a boat transfer to the main village of Vaitape; flights connect via Tahiti. The airport and Vaitape have 4G from Vini. The famous overwater-bungalow resorts sit on the surrounding motus. Have data ready, though resort WiFi often takes over here.
On the subway and rail: Bora Bora moves by boats around the lagoon, plus bicycles and a few taxis on the main island; the resorts run their own boat shuttles. There is no public transit to speak of. Coverage holds across Vaitape and the resort motus; the lagoon excursions hold signal close to shore.
Free public WiFi: The overwater resorts provide guest WiFi, the main connectivity for most visitors given the high data costs. Vaitape cafes offer WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated around the village and the resort motus.
Coverage in the city: Vini runs 4G across Vaitape and the resort motus, with speeds modest compared with what the setting might suggest. Lagoon tours, shark-and-ray snorkel trips and the Mount Otemanu base hold signal close to shore; the outer reef drops briefly. Coverage is reliable around the inhabited areas.
If you prefer a local SIM: Vini is the carrier; buy a SIM in Tahiti before flying over, as Bora Bora outlets are limited. Most European eSIMs exclude French Polynesia, so confirm coverage or rely on a local Vini SIM and the resort WiFi.

Local Network Insights

Curated tips to help you stay connected in French Polynesia.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in French Polynesia to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Installing the eSIM at home means you can switch it on and connect as soon as you land.

Connectivity Overview

What to expect for mobile connectivity in French Polynesia.

French Polynesia spans an enormous area of the South Pacific, but most travelers focus on Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora where Vini (a subsidiary of OPT) provides 4G LTE coverage. Coverage on these main Society Islands is generally reliable in towns, hotels, and resort areas, though speeds are modest compared to mainland France.

Beyond the popular tourist islands, connectivity drops significantly. The Tuamotu atolls, Marquesas Islands, and other remote archipelagos have basic 3G at best, and some smaller islands have no coverage at all. As a French overseas territory, some European eSIM plans may include French Polynesia, but many do not - check your provider's coverage map carefully. Data costs are notably higher than mainland France.

Practical Data Tips

Check if your European eSIM plan covers French Polynesia - many exclude overseas territories
Bora Bora and Moorea have functional 4G but speeds are slower than you might expect
Resort Wi-Fi is often more reliable than cellular data on smaller islands
Download offline maps and entertainment before leaving Tahiti for outer islands
Data prices are significantly higher than mainland France
