Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Ghana has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Accra Metropolitan Area
Excellent

MTN Ghana, Telecel (formerly Vodafone Ghana) and AirtelTigo all run 4G with 5G appearing across central Accra, Osu, Cantonments and East Legon. MTN has the dominant 4G footprint nationally and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers.

Kumasi and the Ashanti Region
Strong

Kumasi city, the Kejetia market area and the Manhyia Palace are fully covered. The drive on the N6 between Accra and Kumasi stays connected; the smaller villages off the main road thin out.

Cape Coast and Elmina (Slave-Castle Heritage)
Strong

Cape Coast, Elmina and the historic forts are well covered. Kakum National Park and the famous canopy walkway have signal at the visitor centre; deeper forest trails see brief drops on every carrier.

Volta Region (Ho, Wli Falls)
Good

Ho city and Hohoe town are covered. The drive to Wli Falls has signal at the visitor centre and the lower fall; the climb to the upper fall thins out, with MTN the most consistent.

Mole National Park and the Northern Savannah
Variable

Damongo town and the Mole motel have functional 4G via MTN. Game-drive routes into the deeper park see signal drops; the long road north to Tamale and Bolgatanga has coverage at the larger towns but thins between them.

Upper East and Far North (Bolgatanga, Bawku)
Limited

The far-northern towns have signal in the centres. The long stretches of empty road, the Sahel-edge villages and the Burkina Faso border region thin to MTN-only and occasionally drop entirely; carry offline maps for any overland travel.

City-by-city connectivity in Ghana
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Accra

Arriving
Kotoka International (ACC) is close to central Accra; transfers are by taxi or the Bolt and Uber ride apps. The airport has 4G/5G from MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo. Accra is one of the better-connected capitals in West Africa. Ghana is well covered by Africa regional eSIM plans.
On the subway and rail
Accra moves by tro-tro minibuses, taxis and the Bolt and Uber ride apps; there is no metro. Coverage holds across Osu, Cantonments, East Legon and the centre. Navigation and the ride apps work reliably across the city.
Free public WiFi
Hotels, the malls (Accra Mall, West Hills) and the cafes provide WiFi. ACC airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is reliable across the capital, comparable to some global standards in the central districts.
Coverage in the city
MTN Ghana, Telecel (formerly Vodafone) and AirtelTigo all run 4G with 5G across central Accra, Osu, Cantonments and East Legon. MTN has the dominant footprint and is the default partner for most travel eSIMs. The Accra-Cape Coast tourist corridor is well covered; the far north thins.
If you prefer a local SIM
MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo sell SIMs at ACC and across the city, with MTN the widest. Ghana is well covered by Africa regional eSIM plans; a local MTN SIM has the best national reach.

Kumasi

Arriving
Kumasi Airport (KMS) serves the Ashanti capital, with flights from Accra; transfers are by taxi or Bolt. The city has 4G from MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo. Kumasi is the heart of the Ashanti Kingdom, home to the Manhyia Palace and the huge Kejetia market. Have data ready for navigation.
On the subway and rail
Kumasi moves by tro-tros, taxis and the Bolt ride app; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the city, the Kejetia market and the Manhyia Palace. The N6 highway to Accra stays connected; the smaller villages off the main road thin out.
Free public WiFi
Hotels, the malls (Kumasi City Mall) and the cafes provide WiFi. KMS airport has basic WiFi. Connectivity is reliable across the city.
Coverage in the city
MTN Ghana, Telecel and AirtelTigo all cover Kumasi, the Kejetia market (one of the largest in West Africa) and the Manhyia Palace, with MTN the widest. The N6 corridor to Accra is connected; the route to the Lake Bosomtwe crater and the rural Ashanti villages thins.
If you prefer a local SIM
MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo sell SIMs at KMS and in Kumasi, with MTN the widest. Ghana is well covered by Africa regional eSIM plans; a local MTN SIM works well across the south.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Ghana.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Ghana to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Ghana.

Ghana offers some of the best mobile connectivity in West Africa. MTN, Vodafone, and AirtelTigo provide strong 4G LTE in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Cape Coast. Accra's Osu district, airport area, and central business districts have reliable high-speed coverage comparable to some global standards.

The southern half of Ghana is generally well-covered, including the coastal route from Accra through Cape Coast to Elmina (popular for visiting historical castles). The Volta Region and northern Ghana have more limited coverage, particularly in rural areas and national parks like Mole. Kakum National Park maintains basic service near the entrance. Ghana is one of the better-connected West African destinations for eSIM travelers.

Practical Data Tips
  • Accra has strong 4G - data is essential for ride-hailing and navigation
  • The Accra-Cape Coast tourist corridor has reliable coverage
  • MTN has the widest and most reliable network across Ghana
  • Download offline maps before visiting Mole National Park in the north
  • Free Wi-Fi is available in many Accra cafes and hotels

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Ghana are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Ghana eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Ghana.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
