Zain Jordan, Orange Jordan and Umniah all run 4G with expanding 5G across central Amman, Abdoun, Sweifieh and the Jabal Amman district. Zain has the widest 5G availability and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers.
The Petra visitor centre, the main Siq walk and the Treasury are all well covered. Signal drops briefly in the deepest narrow canyon sections; the trail to the Monastery (Ad Deir) at the top sees occasional gaps on the climb.
Bedouin camps near the visitor centre have functional 4G via Zain. Once you head deep into the desert on a 4x4 tour, expect to be offline; the canyon and arch hikes are reliably without signal.
The resort corridor along the western shore is fully covered by all three carriers. The Wadi Mujib siq adventure and the deeper canyon sections drop signal between the entrance and the waterfall.
Aqaba city, the dive resort strip and the new South Beach development are all on 4G/5G. Dive boats out to the Cedar Pride wreck and the Japanese Garden reef stay connected for most of the route.
Madaba, Karak Castle and Dana village are covered by all three carriers. The Dana Biosphere Reserve trail interior and the long stretches of empty King's Highway between sites thin out.
Amman
- Arriving
- Queen Alia International (AMM) is about 35 km south of the city. The Airport Express bus (Sariyah) runs to the 7th Circle and Tabarbour and stays connected the whole way; taxis and Careem are the alternatives. All terminals have full 4G/5G from Zain, Orange and Umniah. Activate data before leaving arrivals so Careem and Google Maps work for the run into the hilly city.
- On the subway and rail
- Amman opened its Bus Rapid Transit network in 2022, running along the main valley corridors with continuous signal. There is no metro or commuter rail in the city. Careem is the dominant ride-hail app, with Uber also operating; both need data. The steep hills and circles (the city is built over seven jabals) make GPS navigation genuinely useful, and coverage holds across the climbs.
- Free public WiFi
- The malls leave WiFi open for shoppers: City Mall, Abdali Mall, Mecca Mall and Taj Mall. Cafes along Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman and the Abdali Boulevard offer WiFi with a purchase. AMM airport has free terminal WiFi. Hotels across Abdoun and the city centre provide guest WiFi. Public hotspots are limited, so cellular data is the dependable option.

- Zain Jordan has the widest 5G footprint across Amman, with Orange and Umniah competitive. Downtown (al-Balad), the Citadel, the Roman Theatre, Rainbow Street and the Abdoun embassy district are all well covered. The drive out to the desert castles and north to Jerash holds signal through the towns. Zain is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers in Jordan.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Zain, Orange and Umniah have shops at AMM arrivals and across the city. Zain markets a dedicated tourist line with a generous data allowance valid for a month. Passport ID is required for activation; no biometric step. The eSIM route is straightforward and a Middle East regional plan works well if combining Jordan with Egypt or Israel.
Petra (Wadi Musa)
- Arriving
- The nearest airports are King Hussein International at Aqaba (AQJ), about two hours south, and Queen Alia in Amman (AMM), roughly three hours north via the Desert Highway or the slower scenic King's Highway. The JETT tourist bus from Amman to Wadi Musa is the standard transfer; taxis serve the route too. Coverage holds along both highways through the towns. Have data ready so maps work on the descent into Petra.
- On the subway and rail
- There is no public transit within Petra or Wadi Musa beyond taxis and the JETT bus link to Amman and Aqaba. Inside the archaeological site, movement is on foot, by horse, camel or donkey, or by horse-drawn carriage through the Siq. The walk from the visitor centre through the Siq to the Treasury is the iconic approach. Signal is best in the upper, open sections of the site.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels in Wadi Musa (the Mövenpick at the gate, the Petra Guest House and the budget hostels up the hill) provide guest WiFi. The Petra visitor centre and the larger cafes offer WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the town and the site entrance; deep inside the canyon there is no public WiFi, so cellular data or offline maps carry you through.

- Zain and Orange cover Wadi Musa town, the Petra visitor centre, the Siq entrance and the Treasury plaza.
