Prices are live and may change. Google Fi is excluded from the value ranking because it is a full phone plan rather than a travel data plan.
IPKO and Vala both run 4G across central Pristina, Mother Teresa Boulevard and the Newborn Monument area. IPKO tends to be the slightly faster of the two in the city core. Roaming partnerships are limited, so verify carrier inclusion before relying on a specific eSIM.
The Ottoman-era old town of Prizren, the Sinan Pasha Mosque and the Stone Bridge area are well covered. The drive on the M9 to Brezovica and the Albanian border at Vermicë stays connected at the main villages.
Peja town, the Patriarchate of Peć monastery and the Visoki Dečani UNESCO monastery have 4G at the visitor centres. The drive up the Rugova Gorge to the Bjeshkët e Nemuna (Accursed Mountains) national park has signal at the lower section; the deeper Via Dinarica trail and the Maja e Gjeravicës climb drop coverage.
Gjakova's Çarshia e Madhe bazaar and the road to Mitrovica are covered. The smaller villages of the Dukagjini plain hold signal at the main settlements; rural side roads thin briefly.
Both sides of the Ibar bridge in Mitrovica have signal, but the northern Serb-administered municipalities sometimes pick up Serbian Telekom/MTS networks instead of IPKO/Vala. Verify whether your eSIM treats these as Kosovo or as Serbia for billing.
Brezovica ski resort and the access town of Štrpce have functional 4G at the lifts. The deeper Sharr Mountains National Park trails, the Big Lake (Liqenat) hikes and the longer ridges toward North Macedonia drop coverage past the treeline.
Pristina
- Arriving
- Pristina International (PRN) is about 18 km from the centre; transfers are by taxi or bus. The airport has 4G from IPKO and Vala. Kosovo's telecommunications status is unusual, so many eSIM plans omit it; verify your provider lists Kosovo specifically before relying on one.
- On the subway and rail
- Pristina moves by buses and taxis; the centre around Mother Teresa Boulevard is walkable. There is no metro. Coverage holds across the city, which has a young, connected population. The drive south to Prizren stays connected at the main towns.
- Free public WiFi
- Cafes (abundant in this young capital), the malls and the hotels provide fast, free WiFi. PRN airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is easy in Pristina, a useful backup given the limited eSIM options.
- Coverage in the city
- IPKO and Vala both run 4G across Mother Teresa Boulevard, the Newborn Monument and the centre, with IPKO often slightly faster. Roaming partnerships are limited, so verify carrier inclusion. In northern Mitrovica, phones sometimes pick up Serbian networks instead.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- IPKO and Vala sell SIMs at PRN and in the city. The key issue is that many Balkans and European eSIM plans omit Kosovo entirely due to its telecommunications status, so confirm coverage explicitly or buy a local SIM, and consider a backup plan.
Prizren
- Arriving
- Pristina (PRN) is the gateway, about an hour and a half away; buses run from the capital with signal through the towns. Prizren is Kosovo's most picturesque Ottoman-era town, below a hilltop fortress. Have data ready for maps around the old town and the Sinan Pasha Mosque.
- On the subway and rail
- Prizren moves by buses and taxis; the compact Ottoman old town around the Stone Bridge and the Sinan Pasha Mosque is walkable. There is no metro. Coverage holds across the town; the climb up to the Prizren Fortress has signal at the main viewpoints.
- Free public WiFi
- Cafes and hotels around the Sinan Pasha Mosque and the Stone Bridge provide WiFi. Connectivity is easy in the old town, a useful supplement given the limited eSIM coverage for Kosovo.
- Coverage in the city
- IPKO and Vala cover Prizren old town, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Ottoman Stone Bridge and the climb to the Prizren Fortress (Kalaja). The drive to the Albanian border at Vermicë stays connected. As with the rest of Kosovo, verify your eSIM includes the country.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- IPKO and Vala have shops in Prizren; it is also easy to buy in Pristina on arrival. Because many eSIM plans omit Kosovo, a local SIM is often the most dependable option for a Prizren visit.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Kosovo to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Kosovo is a small, young country in the central Balkans with a developing mobile network. IPKO and Vala (operated by Telekom Kosovo) are the two main carriers, both providing 4G service in Pristina and other urban centers like Prizren, Peja, and Gjakova. Coverage in cities is adequate for navigation, messaging, and social media, though speeds may not match Western European standards. Rural and mountainous areas - including some scenic spots in the Accursed Mountains shared with Albania - can have unreliable or absent coverage.
Kosovo presents a unique challenge for international eSIM users because its country code and network situation mean not all eSIM providers include it in their coverage maps. Before purchasing an eSIM for Kosovo, verify explicitly that the provider lists Kosovo as a supported destination.
Kosovo is not in the EU, and its international telecommunications status can complicate roaming arrangements.
- Verify your eSIM provider explicitly lists Kosovo - many Balkans and European plans omit it entirely
- Coverage in Pristina and Prizren is generally reliable for standard data tasks
- Download offline maps and translation tools before heading to rural or mountain areas
- Wi-Fi at hotels and cafes in Pristina is usually fast and freely available
- Consider having a backup connectivity plan since eSIM coverage options for Kosovo are limited

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Kosovo eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Kosovo.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Kosovo recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
