Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Moldova has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Chișinău (Capital)
Strong

Orange Moldova and Moldcell both run 4G with 5G appearing across central Chișinău, Pushkin Park and the Stefan cel Mare boulevard. Orange has the widest 5G availability in the capital and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers.

Wine Routes (Cricova, Mileștii Mici, Purcari)
Good

The Cricova underground city of wine, the Guinness-record Mileștii Mici cellars and the Purcari winery have functional 4G at the visitor centres and tasting rooms. The drives between them stay connected at the larger villages.

Bălți and the North
Good

Bălți (Moldova's second city) and the Soroca fortress on the Dniester are covered. The drive on the M2 highway through Edineț and the route to the Ukrainian border stays connected at the main towns; smaller rural side roads thin.

Cahul and the Southern Wine Region
Variable

Cahul town has functional 4G via Orange and Moldcell. The Prut river border with Romania and the southern Gagauz autonomous region (Comrat) have signal at the centres; the deeper rural Bessarabian villages thin.

Orheiul Vechi (Old Orhei)
Good

The Orheiul Vechi monastery complex, the cave-church and the visitor centre are well covered. The drive on the R23 through the limestone gorge and the Butuceni village stay connected throughout.

Transnistria (Tiraspol, Bender)
Limited

The breakaway region operates on Interdnestrcom networks. Most Moldovan eSIMs and Orange/Moldcell signals do NOT work in Transnistria; signal may roam onto separate billing. Verify before travel and treat as a different country for connectivity purposes.

City-by-city connectivity in Moldova
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Chișinău

Arriving
Chișinău International (KIV) is about 13 km from the centre; transfers are by bus 30, taxi or the Yandex Go app. The airport has 4G with 5G from Orange Moldova and Moldcell. Moldova is not in the EU and fewer providers cover it, so verify your eSIM includes Moldova before purchasing.
On the subway and rail
Chișinău moves by trolleybuses, buses, marshrutkas and the Yandex Go ride app; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the centre. The capital is the place to download what you need before heading to the rural wine country, where coverage thins.
Free public WiFi
Cafes, the malls (Malldova, Shopping MallDova) and the Stefan cel Mare park provide WiFi. KIV airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is easy across the capital, with cheap cellular data on top.
Coverage in the city
Orange Moldova and Moldcell both run 4G with 5G across the Stefan cel Mare boulevard, the Triumphal Arch, the Nativity Cathedral and the central market. Orange has the wider 5G footprint. Data is cheap. Moldova is outside EU roaming, and fewer providers cover it than neighbouring Romania.
If you prefer a local SIM
Orange Moldova and Moldcell sell prepaid SIMs at KIV and in the city, with cheap data. Since fewer international eSIMs cover Moldova, confirm yours includes it specifically, or buy a local SIM. Note your plan will not work across the border in Transnistria.

Tiraspol (Transnistria)

Arriving
Tiraspol is reached from Chișinău (about an hour and a half) via a checkpoint into the breakaway Transnistria region, by marshrutka or train. Crucially, your Moldovan SIM or travel eSIM will likely stop working here, as the region runs on the separate Interdnestrcom (IDC) network. Download maps before crossing.
On the subway and rail
Tiraspol moves by trolleybuses, marshrutkas and taxis; the centre along 25 October Street is walkable. There is no metro. Coverage in town runs on the local IDC network rather than the Moldovan carriers, so most visitors find their phone without data unless they buy a local IDC SIM.
Free public WiFi
Cafes and the limited hotels provide WiFi, which is the practical connectivity option for visitors given that Moldovan and international plans generally do not work here. Download offline maps in Chișinău before the day trip.
Coverage in the city
Interdnestrcom (IDC) is the local network covering Tiraspol centre, the Sheriff sports complex, the Suvorov statue and the riverside. Moldovan carrier signals (Orange, Moldcell) and most travel eSIMs do NOT reliably work in Transnistria; treat it as a separate country for connectivity.
If you prefer a local SIM
An Interdnestrcom (IDC) local SIM is effectively the only way to get reliable data in Transnistria, and even that is geared to residents. Most travellers simply rely on cafe and hotel WiFi for a short visit, with offline maps downloaded in Chișinău beforehand.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Moldova.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Moldova to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Moldova.

Moldova is one of Europe's least-visited countries but rewards curious travelers with authentic culture, excellent wine regions, and very affordable data costs. Orange Moldova and Moldcell are the primary carriers, providing 4G connectivity in the capital Chisinau and larger towns like Balti and Cahul. Chisinau has reliable coverage for everyday travel needs including navigation and communication.

However, rural Moldova - which includes most of the country's charming countryside, monasteries, and wine routes - can experience significant coverage gaps. The breakaway region of Transnistria operates on separate networks (Interdnestrcom) and may not be covered by your eSIM at all.

Moldova is not in the EU, so European roaming plans typically exclude it. International eSIM coverage for Moldova is available but offered by fewer providers than more popular destinations, so check availability carefully before your trip.

Practical Data Tips
  • Moldova is NOT in the EU - confirm your eSIM plan includes Moldova before purchasing
  • Chisinau has the most reliable coverage - download what you need before heading to rural areas
  • Transnistria uses different networks and is unlikely to be covered by your travel eSIM
  • Wine route touring in Cricova and Milestii Mici often has adequate coverage near the facilities
  • Fewer eSIM providers cover Moldova compared to neighboring Romania - verify coverage in advance

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Moldova are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Moldova eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Moldova.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
