MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and 9mobile all run 4G with 5G appearing across Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lagos Island and Lekki. MTN has the dominant footprint nationally; peak-hour congestion is a real issue across Lagos.
Central Abuja, Wuse, Maitama and the Aso Rock embassy district are all well covered. The drive on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway and out to Suleja stays connected; the Federal Capital Territory roads are among Nigeria's best-covered rural corridors.
Port Harcourt and Calabar are fully on 4G. The delta creek areas and the smaller fishing villages thin out fast; MTN and Globacom are the most consistent in the rural southeast.
Yankari's gateway town of Bauchi has functional 4G. Game-drive routes inside the park and the Wikki Warm Springs area have signal at the lodge; deeper interior tracks thin out on every carrier.
Jos city and the larger plateau towns are covered. The high-altitude routes through the rocky outcrops and the longer drives to Pankshin and Mangu thin briefly; MTN holds up best in rural Plateau.
Kano and Kaduna have full 4G. The drives into the Sahel toward Maiduguri thin out, particularly on the longer trans-Saharan routes; security situations affect coverage continuity in parts of the far northeast.
Lagos
- Arriving
- Murtala Muhammed International (LOS) is the main hub; transfers are by taxi or the Bolt and Uber ride apps. The airport has 4G/5G from MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile. Lagos is Africa's largest city and the economic heart of Nigeria. Expect peak-hour network congestion, and have data ready for the ride apps.
- On the subway and rail
- Lagos moves by danfo minibuses, BRT buses, the new Blue and Red Line urban rail, the lagoon ferries and the Bolt and Uber ride apps. Coverage holds across Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lagos Island and Lekki, though peak-hour congestion slows speeds. The rail and ride apps hold data across the metro.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels, the malls (Ikeja City Mall, the Palms) and the cafes provide WiFi. LOS airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is reliable in the business districts, with congestion the main issue at peak times.
- Coverage in the city
- MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile all run 4G with 5G across Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lagos Island and Lekki. MTN has the dominant footprint. Peak-hour congestion is a real issue across Lagos. Coverage is strong in the islands and the mainland business areas.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile sell SIMs at LOS and across the city, with MTN the widest. Nigeria requires SIM registration (NIN-linked). Nigeria is well covered by Africa regional eSIM plans; a local MTN SIM has the best reach.
Abuja
- Arriving
- Nnamdi Azikiwe International (ABV) is about 40 km from central Abuja; transfers are by taxi or Bolt. The airport has 4G/5G from MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile. Abuja is the planned federal capital, calmer and better-organised than Lagos. Have data ready for the ride apps and navigation.
- On the subway and rail
- Abuja moves by taxis, the Bolt and Uber ride apps and the Abuja light rail; there is no full metro. Coverage holds across the centre, Wuse, Maitama and the Aso Rock district. The Abuja-Kaduna expressway stays connected, and the FCT roads are among the best-covered in Nigeria.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels, the malls (Jabi Lake Mall, Ceddi Plaza) and the cafes provide WiFi. ABV airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is reliable across the Federal Capital Territory.
- Coverage in the city
- MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile all run 4G with 5G across central Abuja, Wuse, Maitama and the Aso Rock area, with MTN the widest. The FCT roads and the Abuja-Kaduna expressway are well covered. Congestion is far less of an issue than in Lagos.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile sell SIMs at ABV and in Abuja, with MTN the widest. NIN-linked SIM registration applies. Nigeria is well covered by Africa regional eSIM plans; a local MTN SIM works well.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Nigeria to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Nigeria is Africa's largest economy and has a rapidly developing mobile landscape. MTN, Airtel, Globacom (Glo), and 9mobile provide 4G LTE in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and other major cities. Lagos, particularly Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ikeja, has strong 4G coverage suitable for data-heavy usage including ride-hailing and streaming.
However, Nigeria's enormous size and population create uneven coverage. Northern cities like Kano and Kaduna have functional 4G, but rural areas across the country have inconsistent coverage. Network congestion in Lagos can cause slowdowns during peak hours. MTN has the widest overall coverage, followed by Airtel. Nigeria is well-covered by Africa regional eSIM plans and is one of the continent's key connectivity markets.
- Lagos Victoria Island and Lekki have strong 4G essential for Bolt and Uber
- MTN has the widest and most reliable network across Nigeria
- Expect network congestion in Lagos during peak hours
- Abuja has good coverage across the FCT

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Nigeria eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Nigeria.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Nigeria recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
