Prices are live and may change. Google Fi is excluded from the value ranking because it is a full phone plan rather than a travel data plan.
Más Móvil (formerly Movistar Panama), Tigo Panama and Claro Panama all run 4G with 5G appearing across the Panama City banking district, Casco Viejo and the Cinta Costera. The Panama Metro (Lines 1 and 2) has cell coverage on every station, including the underground stretches.
The Miraflores and Gatun visitor centres and the Panama Railway between Panama City and Colón are well covered. Cruise ships transiting the canal hold signal close to shore; the middle of Gatun Lake sees brief drops on the cruise day.
Bocas Town (Isla Colón) has functional 4G via Más Móvil. The water taxis between islands keep signal close to Colón; outer islands like Bastimentos and Carenero have coverage in the village hubs but thin on quieter beaches and dive sites.
The San Blas archipelago is administered by the autonomous Guna Yala territory. Cellular coverage is minimal across the islands; most are reliably offline once you leave the speedboat landing zones near El Porvenir.
Boquete town, the Caldera hot springs and the coffee-tour farms are well covered. The Volcán Barú climb has signal at the trailhead and the summit (on clear days), with intermittent drops on the deeper forest sections of the trail.
Yaviza, the end of the Pan-American Highway, has signal at the town. The Darién Gap jungle (the famous road-free crossing toward Colombia) is reliably offline; the indigenous Emberá and Wounaan villages have minimal coverage, mostly via radio.
Panama City
- Arriving
- Tocumen International (PTY) is about 25 km from the centre; transfers are by taxi, Uber or the Metro. The airport has 4G with 5G from Más Móvil, Tigo and Claro. Have data ready for the Uber and Metro Bus apps and the Canal-visit logistics.
- On the subway and rail
- The Panama Metro (Lines 1 and 2, with Line 3 under construction) has cell coverage on every station including the underground stretches, alongside the Metro Bus and Uber. Coverage holds across the banking district, Casco Viejo and the Cinta Costera. The Canal visitor centres are covered.
- Free public WiFi
- The malls leave WiFi open: Multiplaza and Albrook Mall. Cafes, Casco Viejo and the hotels offer WiFi. PTY airport has terminal WiFi. Hotels provide guest WiFi as standard, so the city is easy to stay connected in.
- Coverage in the city
- Más Móvil (formerly Movistar Panama), Tigo and Claro all run 4G with 5G across the banking district, Casco Viejo and the Cinta Costera. The Metro is fully covered. The Miraflores Canal visitor centre is covered; cruise ships transiting the Canal hold signal close to shore.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Más Móvil, Tigo and Claro sell prepaid SIMs at PTY and in the malls. A Latin America regional eSIM works well for a trip combining Panama with Costa Rica or Colombia; for Panama alone, a local SIM or eSIM both work.
Bocas del Toro
- Arriving
- Bocas del Toro Isla Colón Airport (BOC) takes flights from Panama City; the alternative is a bus to Almirante and a water taxi. The island's main vehicles are bikes and golf carts. The airstrip has 4G from Más Móvil. Have data ready for the island-hopping boat bookings.
- On the subway and rail
- Bocas Town on Isla Colón moves by water taxis between islands, bikes and golf carts; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the town. The water taxis keep signal close to Colón; the outer islands and the dive sites thin out.
- Free public WiFi
- Hostels, hotels and cafes in Bocas Town provide WiFi, the main supplement when island-hopping. The BOC airstrip has basic WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated on Isla Colón.
- Coverage in the city
- Más Móvil runs 4G across Bocas Town on Isla Colón, with the other carriers thinner. The water taxis between islands keep signal close to Colón; the outer islands like Bastimentos and Carenero have coverage in the village hubs but thin on the quieter beaches and dive sites.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- It is easiest to buy a Más Móvil, Tigo or Claro SIM in Panama City before flying over, or use a Latin America regional eSIM. Bocas Town has small outlets and plenty of hostel WiFi.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Panama to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Panama offers solid mobile connectivity, particularly strong in Panama City and the Canal Zone. Movistar, Tigo, and Claro provide 4G LTE across the capital, Colon, David, and the main Pacific coast areas. Panama City's modern infrastructure means excellent coverage in the financial district (Cinta Costera), Casco Viejo, and surrounding areas.
The San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) have very limited connectivity, with some islands having basic signal and others none at all. Bocas del Toro town has functional coverage, but remote islands in the archipelago can be spotty. The Darien Gap region near the Colombian border has essentially no coverage. For the typical Panama itinerary covering the Canal, Panama City, and one beach destination, connectivity will be consistently reliable.
- Panama City has excellent coverage - data is essential for Uber and Metro Bus apps
- The Panama Canal visitor centers have reliable coverage for photos and social media
- San Blas Islands have very limited coverage - enjoy being offline
- Bocas del Toro town has coverage but outer islands may not
- A Latin America regional plan works well if also visiting Costa Rica or Colombia

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Panama eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Panama.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Panama recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
