Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Peru has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Lima Metropolitan Area
Excellent

Movistar, Claro and Entel all run 5G across central Lima, Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro. Bitel is the budget MVNO option but has smaller coverage. Movistar has the widest 5G footprint nationally.

Cusco and the Sacred Valley
Strong

Cusco city, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Urubamba are all well covered. High-altitude side roads to Maras and Moray and the more remote Andean villages thin out on every carrier; Claro is the most consistent above 3,800 m.

Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail
Good

Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) and the visitor centre at the citadel have signal. The Classic Inca Trail and the Salkantay Trek drop coverage in the deep valleys between camps; signal returns at the Sun Gate and the citadel itself.

Amazon Basin (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Manu)
Variable

Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado have functional 4G in town. River lodge boats up the Madre de Dios and the deeper Amazon excursions lose signal quickly; most jungle lodges run satellite WiFi for emergencies only.

Lake Titicaca (Puno)
Good

Puno city and the floating island tours close to shore have coverage. The longer day trips out to Taquile and Amantani islands rely on Movistar for the most consistent signal, with brief drops on the open lake crossings.

Arequipa and Colca Canyon
Strong

Arequipa city is fully covered. The drive up to the canyon and the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint have signal at the main stops; trekking days into the deeper Colca Canyon thin out fast, especially on the descent to Sangalle.

City-by-city connectivity in Peru
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Lima

Arriving
Jorge Chávez International (LIM) is about 12 km from the centre in Callao. There is no rail link yet (Metro Line 2 will eventually reach it), so the transfer is the Airport Express Lima bus or a taxi, Uber, Cabify, DiDi or InDriver. All terminals have full 5G from Movistar, Claro and Entel. Have data live on arrival so the ride apps and navigation work into the city.
On the subway and rail
Lima Metro Line 1 (elevated) has cell coverage along the line, and the Metropolitano bus rapid transit and the corredor buses stay connected. Line 2 (underground) is under construction. Uber, Cabify, DiDi and InDriver all operate and need data. Coverage holds across Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro and on the clifftop Malecón.
Free public WiFi
The malls leave WiFi open: Larcomar on the Miraflores cliffs, Jockey Plaza and the Real Plaza centres. Cafes around Parque Kennedy and across Barranco offer WiFi. LIM airport has free terminal WiFi. Hotels provide guest WiFi as standard, so the tourist districts are easy to stay connected in.
Coverage in the city
Movistar has the widest 5G footprint across Lima, with Claro and Entel present and Bitel as the budget option. Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro and the historic centre around the Plaza Mayor are all densely covered. Larcomar and the Malecón clifftop walk are connected. The ride apps and the Metropolitano hold data across the metro.
If you prefer a local SIM
Movistar, Claro, Entel and Bitel sell prepaid SIMs at LIM and in the malls. Peru requires SIM registration with a passport and a fingerprint at the point of sale. Tourist data is affordable. The eSIM route, supported by the major carriers, is the simplest path and avoids the in-store biometric step.

Cusco

Arriving
Alejandro Velasco Astete International (CUZ) is about 5 km from the centre, so a taxi to the Plaza de Armas is quick. All terminals have full 4G/5G from Movistar, Claro and Entel. Cusco sits at around 3,400 m, so allow time to acclimatise. Have data ready for the PeruRail and Inca Rail bookings and the Sacred Valley logistics.
On the subway and rail
Cusco's historic centre around the Plaza de Armas and San Blas is walkable; taxis and colectivos cover the wider city. The PeruRail and Inca Rail trains run from Poroy and Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes for Machu Picchu, holding signal at the stations and dropping in the deep valley sections. The Sacred Valley towns are linked by road with coverage in the centres.
Free public WiFi
Hotels and cafes around the Plaza de Armas and the San Blas artisan quarter, and the San Pedro market area, provide WiFi. The larger restaurants offer guest WiFi. CUZ airport has free terminal WiFi. Connectivity is easy in the historic centre, with a working eSIM covering the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu trips.
Coverage in the city
Movistar, Claro and Entel all cover the historic centre, the Plaza de Armas, San Blas, Sacsayhuamán and the San Pedro market. The Sacred Valley towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo are covered; Claro is the most consistent above 3,800 m. The Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek drop coverage in the deep valleys, with signal returning at the Sun Gate and the Machu Picchu citadel.
If you prefer a local SIM
Movistar, Claro and Entel sell prepaid SIMs at CUZ and in the centre. Peruvian passport-and-fingerprint registration applies as it does nationwide. Tourist data is affordable. The eSIM route is the cleanest option for a Cusco and Machu Picchu trip combined with Lima.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Peru.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Peru to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Peru.

Peru offers solid mobile connectivity in its major cities and along the main tourist corridors. Claro, Movistar, and Entel provide 4G LTE in Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, and along the Sacred Valley route. Lima has strong, consistent coverage across Miraflores, Barranco, and the historic center, while Cusco's tourist areas maintain reliable service for navigation and messaging.

Machu Picchu itself has basic coverage near the entrance and in Aguas Calientes (the gateway town), but signal is inconsistent within the ruins. The Inca Trail has no coverage for most of its length. The Amazon basin lodges around Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado are largely offline. Lake Titicaca has coverage in Puno but not on the floating islands. For Peru's iconic trekking and nature experiences, download everything offline before departure.

Practical Data Tips
  • Cusco and the Sacred Valley have reliable coverage in towns and along main roads
  • Aguas Calientes has coverage but Machu Picchu ruins have inconsistent signal
  • No coverage on the Inca Trail - download maps and guides in advance
  • Lima's Miraflores district has excellent 4G for ride-hailing and navigation
  • Claro has the best coverage in remote and highland areas

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Peru are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Peru eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Peru.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
