Swisscom runs the widest 5G in Switzerland and is consistent across all three federal-government and financial cities. Sunrise and Salt are competitive in the urban cores.
Resort villages and the lower-mountain lift networks have full coverage. Top stations like the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Jungfraujoch stay live thanks to dedicated alpine 5G installations.
Continuous 5G along the lake shore from Geneva through Montreux. The MOB Golden Pass train into the mountains keeps coverage at the lakeside, then drops to Variable as the line climbs.
Wengen, Mürren, Grindelwald and the cogwheel railways all hold signal at the valley floor and station stops. Hiking off the marked paths between the cliffs sees brief drops, even on Swisscom.
Mountain huts (cabanes) along the Haute Route and Via Alpina have signal at most of the hut locations themselves. Long traverses between huts can lose coverage entirely, especially above 3,000 m.
The Italian-speaking south has strong Swisscom and Sunrise 5G in the lakeside cities. The Gotthard base tunnel loses signal for the 57 km run, then service returns immediately at the southern portal.

- Zurich Airport (ZRH) is 10 km north of the city - the largest in Switzerland. SBB trains connect to Zurich Hauptbahnhof in 10-13 minutes, with continuous Swisscom/Sunrise/Salt 5G throughout including the Wipkingen tunnel approach. All terminals have full 5G. Note: Switzerland is NOT in the EU, so EU regional eSIM plans usually don't work here - verify Swiss coverage on your plan.

- Zurich has trams, buses, S-Bahn (suburban rail) and trolleybuses managed by VBZ - all keep continuous cellular signal across the city. SBB Intercity and InterRegio trains across Switzerland (the iconic Glacier Express, Bernina Express, Golden Pass) have great signal in valley sections and at stations; long mountain tunnels (Gotthard 57 km, Lötschberg 35 km) lose signal entirely. The Polybahn funicular from Central to ETH stays connected. Boats on Lake Zurich stay covered near shore.

- SBB-FREE WiFi at every Swiss rail station - register once with email or social login. The City of Zurich runs free WiFi in Bahnhofstrasse, the Old Town (Niederdorf), Bürkliplatz and the lakefront. SwissCom Public WiFi at malls (Sihlcity, Glattzentrum) is open. ZRH airport free WiFi is unlimited. Cafes universally have open WiFi.

- Swisscom has the densest 5G across Zurich and the broadest national reach - particularly strong indoor coverage in the older Limmat-side buildings of the Old Town and across the financial district at Paradeplatz. Sunrise is highly competitive in the modern Europaallee district and the Hardbrücke area. Salt has solid 5G in the city centre. Coverage at the Grossmünster cathedral, Lake Zurich boat docks and the Uetliberg viewpoint is excellent. Swisscom 5G handles indoor at the FIFA Museum and Park Hyatt with no degradation.

- Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt all have flagship stores at Zurich HB (Hauptbahnhof) and Bahnhofstrasse. Tourist prepaid SIMs from CHF 25 with several GBs over 30 days - data plans are expensive globally. Migros M-Budget Mobile (Swisscom wholesale) and Lebara prepaid at Coop and Migros supermarkets offer cheaper alternatives. Bring passport.
Geneva
- Arriving
- Geneva Airport (GVA) is right at the French border - the airport actually has French and Swiss sectors. SBB Intercity trains to Geneva Cornavin (the main station) take 7 minutes; full signal throughout. The TPG Bus 28 is an alternative. Geneva sits on the Lake Geneva (Léman) shore - the French side (Évian-les-Bains) is a 35-minute boat ride. Crossing into France: most EU plans won't work in Switzerland; same situation in reverse.
- On the subway and rail
- TPG (Transports publics genevois) runs trams (lines 12, 14, 15, 17, 18), buses, trolleybuses and Léman Express commuter rail (which crosses into France with continuous cell signal). All MRT-equivalent rail stays connected. CGN paddle steamers across Lake Geneva to Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux keep signal close to either shore. The Salève cable car from the French side has signal at lower stations; the summit drops briefly.
- Free public WiFi
- Ville-Geneve free WiFi covers the Old Town, Jet d'Eau area, Plaine de Plainpalais and the UN/Botanic Garden zones - no registration. SBB-FREE at Geneva Cornavin and all rail stations. GVA airport free WiFi unlimited. Cafes throughout the Old Town and Pâquis (the multicultural quarter) have open WiFi. International organisation buildings (UN, WHO, ICRC) have guest WiFi for visitors.
- Coverage in the city
- Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt all run 5G across central Geneva. Swisscom is particularly strong in the diplomatic district around the UN and across the lakeside Quai du Mont-Blanc. Sunrise has dense coverage in Eaux-Vives and the new Praille-Acacias-Vernets development. Salt is competitive in the Old Town. Coverage at the Jet d'Eau waterfront, St. Pierre Cathedral, the Reformation Wall and CERN visitor centre is excellent. The cross-border tram to Annemasse (Léman Express) keeps signal until the French border - then EU networks (Orange France, SFR, Bouygues) take over.
