Network coverage, region by region
Most β€œbest eSIM” pages tell you Uganda has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Kampala and Entebbe
Strong

MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda both run dense 4G across central Kampala, the suburbs, Entebbe town and along the Entebbe Expressway to the airport. MTN has the widest 4G footprint nationally and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Gorilla Trekking)
Variable

Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Ruhija (the four trailhead sectors) all have functional MTN signal at the lodges and ranger posts. The gorilla treks themselves, deep into the bamboo and mountain forest, are reliably offline; plan for a half-day disconnect.

Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks
Good

Mweya Lodge and the main park gates have signal. Game drives in the Kasenyi Plains have signal at the start; the Kazinga Channel boat cruise stays connected close to shore. Murchison's top of the falls viewpoint is covered; the river boat to the base of the falls thins out.

Lake Victoria and Ssese Islands
Good

The ferry routes from Entebbe and Bukakata are well covered; the larger Ssese Islands (Bugala) have signal in the main villages. Smaller islands and quieter beaches lean on MTN for usable coverage.

Rwenzori Mountains and Western Uganda
Variable

Kasese town and the Rwenzori trailheads at Mihunga have functional 4G. The climb up the Mountains of the Moon (the snow peaks toward Margherita) drops signal entirely; treat the multi-day Rwenzori trek as fully offline.

Karamoja and the Northeast
Limited

Moroto and the larger northeastern towns have signal in the centres. The vast plains of Karamoja, the Kidepo Valley National Park interior and the South Sudan border region are largely offline; even MTN thins out on the long drives.

City-by-city connectivity in Uganda
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Kampala

Arriving
Entebbe International (EBB) is about 40 km from Kampala along the Entebbe Expressway; transfers are by taxi or the Bolt and SafeBoda ride apps. The airport has 4G from MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda. Kampala is the capital; the airport road via Entebbe is well-served. Uganda is well covered by Africa regional eSIMs.
On the subway and rail
Kampala moves by matatu minibuses, boda-boda motorbike taxis and the Bolt and SafeBoda ride apps; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the central districts and the Entebbe Expressway. The ride apps are essential in the traffic and hold data across the city.
Free public WiFi
Hotels, the malls (Acacia, Garden City) and the cafes provide WiFi. EBB airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is reliable across the capital and Entebbe.
Coverage in the city
MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda both run dense 4G across central Kampala, the suburbs, Entebbe town and the Expressway, with MTN the widest. The Lake Victoria ferries and the Ssese Islands are covered at the main villages. The gorilla parks and the Rwenzori thin out.
If you prefer a local SIM
MTN and Airtel sell SIMs at EBB and in Kampala, with MTN the wider. Uganda is well covered by Africa regional eSIM plans; a local MTN SIM works well for the cities and main roads.

Jinja

Arriving
Entebbe International (EBB) is about two and a half hours from Jinja; transfers are by taxi, shuttle or matatu. Jinja, on the Nile at the lake's outflow, is Uganda's adventure-sports hub (rafting, kayaking, bungee). The town has 4G from MTN and Airtel. Have data ready for the activity bookings.
On the subway and rail
Jinja moves by matatus, boda-bodas and taxis; the town and the Source of the Nile area are the main hubs. There is no metro. Coverage holds across Jinja and along the Kampala highway. The white-water rafting put-ins on the Nile have signal close to town.
Free public WiFi
The backpacker lodges, the riverside camps and the cafes provide WiFi. Connectivity is reliable in town, with lodge WiFi the supplement for the adventure crowd.
Coverage in the city
MTN Uganda and Airtel cover Jinja town, the Source of the Nile, the rafting put-ins and the riverside camps. The white-water sections of the Nile hold signal close to town; the deeper rural drives toward the eastern border thin out. MTN is the wider rurally.
If you prefer a local SIM
MTN and Airtel sell SIMs in Jinja; it is easy to buy in Kampala or at Entebbe on arrival. An Africa regional eSIM that includes Uganda works well; MTN has the best rural reach.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Uganda.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Uganda to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Uganda.

Uganda has developing mobile connectivity, with strongest coverage in Kampala and along the main highways. MTN, Airtel, and Lycamobile provide 4G LTE in Kampala, Entebbe, and Jinja. Kampala has good coverage across central areas, and the airport road between Kampala and Entebbe is well-served.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has very limited coverage - don't expect signal during treks. Queen Elizabeth National Park has basic coverage near main camps, and the Kazinga Channel area has intermittent service. Murchison Falls National Park has limited coverage outside the main lodge areas. Lake Bunyonyi has coverage in the main trading centers but not everywhere around the lake. Uganda is well-covered by Africa regional eSIM plans.

Practical Data Tips
  • Kampala and Entebbe have reliable 4G from MTN and Airtel
  • No coverage during gorilla trekking in Bwindi - download everything offline
  • National park lodges may offer Wi-Fi but don't count on cellular data
  • MTN has the widest coverage across Uganda
  • Data is essential for Bolt and SafeBoda ride-hailing in Kampala

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Uganda are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Uganda eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Uganda.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
