Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Mongolia has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Ulaanbaatar Metropolitan Area
Strong

Mobicom, Unitel and Skytel all run 4G across central Ulaanbaatar, Sukhbaatar Square and the Zaisan district. Mobicom has the widest 4G footprint nationally and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers.

Provincial Capitals (Erdenet, Darkhan, Choibalsan)
Good

The larger provincial capitals have functional 4G in the town centres. The drives between them on the main paved highways have intermittent signal; longer dirt-road sections drop coverage for hours.

Gobi Desert (Dalanzadgad, Khongoryn Els, Yolyn Am)
Limited

Dalanzadgad town has functional 4G via Mobicom. Once you head into the dunes at Khongoryn Els, the ice canyon Yolyn Am or the flaming cliffs at Bayanzag, expect to be offline. Plan for genuinely offline nights at ger camps.

Lake Khövsgöl Region
Variable

Mörön town has 4G. The northern shore camps near Khatgal have signal at the main resorts; deeper into the taiga toward the Tuvan reindeer herders, coverage drops to nothing.

Steppe and Nomadic Routes (Naadam Circuits)
Limited

The classic horseback nomadic routes through the steppe are essentially offline. Any trip outside Ulaanbaatar and the provincial capital network should be planned with offline maps and a satellite communicator if safety matters.

City-by-city connectivity in Mongolia
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Ulaanbaatar

Arriving
Chinggis Khaan International (UBN, opened 2021) is about 50 km from the city; transfers are by airport bus or taxi. There is no rail link. The airport has 4G from Mobicom, Unitel and Skytel. Use your time in the capital to download everything, as rural Mongolia is almost entirely offline.
On the subway and rail
Ulaanbaatar moves by UBus buses, taxis and ride apps like UBCab; there is no metro or urban rail. Coverage holds across the centre, though traffic and dust are heavy. The capital holds roughly half the country's population and most of its network infrastructure.
Free public WiFi
The malls leave WiFi open: the State Department Store, Shangri-La Mall and Hunnu Mall. Cafes and Sukhbaatar Square offer WiFi. UBN airport has terminal WiFi. Hotels provide guest WiFi as standard, useful for downloading content before heading out.
Coverage in the city
Mobicom, Unitel and Skytel all run 4G across central Ulaanbaatar, Sukhbaatar Square, the Gandan Monastery and the Zaisan Memorial. Mobicom has the widest national footprint. This is essentially the only place in the country with reliable coverage; step outside the capital and the steppe is offline.
If you prefer a local SIM
Mobicom, Unitel and Skytel sell SIMs at UBN and in the city. Few international eSIM providers include Mongolia, and even those that do only work in or near Ulaanbaatar. A local SIM plus offline preparation is the realistic approach, with a satellite communicator for the steppe and Gobi.

Kharkhorin (Karakorum)

Arriving
Kharkhorin lies about 360 km west of Ulaanbaatar, roughly a six-hour drive or a short domestic flight. It sits in the Orkhon Valley near the Erdene Zuu monastery, on the site of Genghis Khan's ancient capital. Buy a SIM and download maps in Ulaanbaatar before the drive, as connectivity thins quickly outside the capital.
On the subway and rail
Kharkhorin is reached by long drives or small flights from Ulaanbaatar; the town and the Erdene Zuu monastery are walkable, with the surrounding Orkhon Valley explored by 4x4 and on horseback. There is no public transit to speak of. Coverage is concentrated in the town.
Free public WiFi
The ger camps and guesthouses around Kharkhorin sometimes have satellite WiFi, but speeds are very slow. The town guesthouses offer basic WiFi. Connectivity is far more limited than in Ulaanbaatar, so download what you need beforehand.
Coverage in the city
Mobicom runs 4G in Kharkhorin town and around the Erdene Zuu monastery, Mongolia's oldest. The surrounding Orkhon Valley steppe, the waterfall and the ger camps drop signal quickly; treat anything beyond the town itself as largely offline territory.
If you prefer a local SIM
There are few carrier outlets in Kharkhorin, so buy a Mobicom, Unitel or Skytel SIM in Ulaanbaatar before the drive. International eSIM coverage, where it exists at all for Mongolia, will not reach out here, so plan for offline stretches and carry a satellite communicator.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Mongolia.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Mongolia to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Mongolia.

Mongolia presents some of the most unique connectivity challenges of any travel destination. Mobicom, Unitel, and Skytel provide 4G coverage in Ulaanbaatar, where data speeds are adequate for navigation, social media, and general browsing. The capital is home to roughly half the country's population, and its network infrastructure reflects that concentration.

Once you leave Ulaanbaatar, the picture changes dramatically. Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries on Earth, and vast stretches of steppe, the Gobi Desert, and mountain regions have no mobile coverage whatsoever. Popular tourist routes to places like the Flaming Cliffs, Khustain Nuruu National Park, and Orkhon Valley may pass through hours of complete radio silence. Ger camps in remote areas rarely have cellular service.

Travelers should treat Mongolia as largely an offline destination outside the capital. Download everything you need before leaving Ulaanbaatar, and consider a satellite communicator for safety on extended steppe or desert journeys.

Practical Data Tips
  • Download all maps, guides, and entertainment before leaving Ulaanbaatar - rural Mongolia is offline
  • Consider a satellite communication device for safety on multi-day steppe or Gobi trips
  • Ulaanbaatar has reliable 4G - use your time in the capital to prepare and download content
  • Ger camps and tourist lodges occasionally have Wi-Fi via satellite, but speeds are very slow
  • Battery management matters - charge all devices fully when power is available in remote areas

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Mongolia are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Mongolia eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Mongolia.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
