City-by-city connectivity in Puerto Rico
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

San Juan

Arriving
Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) is a short ride from the city; transfers are by taxi or Uber. The airport has 4G/5G from T-Mobile, AT&T and Claro. As a US territory, most US eSIM and carrier plans include Puerto Rico at no extra charge, so check yours before buying a separate plan.
On the subway and rail
The Tren Urbano metro has cell coverage on its line, alongside the AMA buses and Uber. Coverage holds across Old San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde, comparable to a US mainland city. The compact Old San Juan is best walked, with strong signal throughout the colonial core.
Free public WiFi
The malls (Plaza Las Américas), Old San Juan, the Condado hotels and the cafes provide WiFi. SJU airport has terminal WiFi. Connectivity is excellent across the metro, on par with the US mainland.
Coverage in the city
T-Mobile, AT&T and Claro all run 5G across Old San Juan, Condado and the Isla Verde resort area, with T-Mobile the dominant island-wide. Coverage is excellent in the metro. El Yunque and the central mountains thin; Culebra and Vieques are covered in town but drop at remote beaches.
If you prefer a local SIM
Most US eSIM and carrier plans include Puerto Rico at no surcharge, so check before buying a Caribbean plan. T-Mobile, AT&T and Claro also sell local SIMs at SJU and in the city if needed.

Ponce

Arriving
Mercedita Airport (PSE) serves Ponce, with San Juan (SJU) about an hour and a half away by car; transfers are by taxi. The carriers cover the route. Ponce, the "Pearl of the South", is Puerto Rico's second city. Most US plans include the island, so connectivity is seamless for US-carrier travellers.
On the subway and rail
Ponce moves by taxis, públicos (shared cars) and a downtown trolley; the Plaza Las Delicias and the historic centre are walkable. There is no metro. Coverage holds across the city and the coast. The mountainous interior toward the Cordillera Central thins.
Free public WiFi
The Plaza Las Delicias area, the hotels and the La Guancha boardwalk provide WiFi. Connectivity is reliable across the city, comparable to the US mainland.
Coverage in the city
T-Mobile, AT&T and Claro all cover Ponce's historic centre, the Plaza Las Delicias, the red-and-black Parque de Bombas firehouse and the La Guancha waterfront. T-Mobile is the dominant carrier. The drive north into the Cordillera Central mountains sees some gaps.
If you prefer a local SIM
Most US plans include Puerto Rico, so a separate SIM is rarely needed. T-Mobile, AT&T and Claro sell local SIMs in Ponce and at San Juan airport otherwise.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Puerto Rico.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Puerto Rico to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico, as a US territory, benefits from American telecom infrastructure. T-Mobile, AT&T, and Claro provide strong 4G LTE and 5G coverage in San Juan, Ponce, Mayaguez, and along the main highways. Old San Juan, Condado, and the Isla Verde resort area have excellent connectivity comparable to any US mainland city.

The mountainous interior, including the area around El Yunque National Forest and parts of the central mountain range (Cordillera Central), has reduced coverage. Culebra and Vieques, the popular offshore islands, have functional coverage in their main towns but can be spotty in remote beach areas. Most US eSIM plans include Puerto Rico at no extra charge, making connectivity seamless for travelers already using American carriers.

Practical Data Tips
  • Most US eSIM plans include Puerto Rico - check before buying a separate Caribbean plan
  • San Juan has excellent 5G/4G coverage comparable to US mainland cities
  • Download offline maps before driving through the mountainous interior
  • Culebra and Vieques have coverage in town but can drop at remote beaches
  • T-Mobile has strong coverage across the island as the dominant carrier

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Puerto Rico are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Puerto Rico eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

Download offline maps for Puerto Rico.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.

Pricing on this page is pulled live from our database and refreshed every four hours. Coverage notes are sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners. Provider rankings are determined by price-per-gigabyte and plan flexibility, not by who pays the largest commission.
