Marigot
- Arriving
- The French side's small Grand Case-Espérance (SFG) takes regional flights, while most arrivals use Princess Juliana (SXM) on the Dutch side; transfers are by taxi across the open border. The French side has 4G from Orange, Dauphin Telecom and Digicel. As a French collectivity, EU roaming may apply, but verify your plan includes St. Martin.
- On the subway and rail
- Marigot moves by buses and taxis; the market, the harbour and Fort Louis are walkable. There is no metro. The island's border with Dutch Sint Maarten is open and unmarked, but your phone switches networks when you cross. Coverage holds across the French side.
- Free public WiFi
- The Marigot market, the Grand Case restaurants and the hotels provide WiFi. Connectivity is easy across the French side, a supplement to the cellular data.
- Coverage in the city
- Orange, Dauphin Telecom and Digicel cover Marigot, the Grand Case gourmet strip and Orient Bay on the French side. Crossing to the Dutch side (Sint Maarten) switches to the Dutch carriers, which can trigger separate roaming, so watch which network you are on near the border.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Orange and Dauphin Telecom sell SIMs on the French side. A European eSIM may cover St. Martin under EU roaming, but verify it lists the collectivity; note the French and Dutch sides use separate networks despite the open border.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Saint Martin to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Saint-Martin is the French northern half of an island shared with Dutch Sint Maarten. Orange, Dauphin Telecom, and Digicel provide 4G coverage across the French side. Marigot, Orient Beach, Grand Case, and the resort areas have reliable connectivity. As a French overseas collectivity, EU roaming may apply with some European eSIM plans.
The island is small enough - the French side is about 21 square miles - for near-complete coverage. You may seamlessly pick up Dutch side networks when crossing between the two halves, which could affect roaming charges depending on your plan. The border between French and Dutch sides is completely open with no checkpoints, so your phone may switch networks without warning.
- Check if your European eSIM plan covers Saint-Martin - not all include overseas collectivities
- Your phone may switch between French and Dutch networks when crossing the island border
- Marigot and Grand Case have strong, reliable coverage
- Be aware of roaming charges if your plan treats the Dutch side differently
- The island is tiny - you won't need much data for navigation

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Saint Martin eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Saint Martin.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Saint Martin recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
