What if it was just $5.00 a GB, everywhere?

We are considering a BetterSIM eSIM at one flat rate worldwide. No tiers, no bundles, no per-country price shopping, no volume discounts you never reach. The same $5.00 in Sao Tome and Principe as in Fiji or Kenya.

Your 4 GB would cost$20.00($5.00/GB, credit never expires)

Straight answer: this would not be the cheapest option. The plans listed on this page are often less per GB, especially in Europe and Asia. It would be the simplest. Savings against Google Fi depend on usage, Bill Protection and speed needs.

How this would work

City-by-city connectivity in Sao Tome and Principe

Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

São Tomé

Arriving
São Tomé International (TMS) is a short ride from the capital; transfers are by taxi. The city has 3G/4G from CST and Unitel STP. São Tomé is the small capital of this Gulf of Guinea island nation. Very few international eSIM providers cover the country, so verify before relying on one.
On the subway and rail
São Tomé moves by shared taxis and minibuses; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the capital and the main coastal road. The mountainous, forested interior and the Obô National Park drop signal; the smaller island of Príncipe has more limited coverage.
Free public WiFi
Hotels and the larger restaurants provide WiFi, generally the most reliable option. TMS airport has basic WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the capital, with hotel and resort WiFi the backup.
Coverage in the city
CST (Companhia Santomense de Telecomunicações) and Unitel STP run 3G/4G across the São Tomé capital and along the main coastal road. The Obô National Park interior and the deeper south are largely offline; Príncipe island has more limited service in its main town.
If you prefer a local SIM
CST and Unitel STP sell SIMs in São Tomé. Very few international eSIM providers cover the country, so a local SIM or hotel WiFi is the practical option; download offline maps before exploring the interior.

Local Network Insights

Curated tips to help you stay connected in Sao Tome and Principe.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Sao Tome and Principe to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Installing the eSIM at home means you can switch it on and connect as soon as you land.

Connectivity Overview

What to expect for mobile connectivity in Sao Tome and Principe.

Sao Tome and Principe is a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea with basic mobile connectivity. CST (Companhia Santomense de Telecomunicacoes) provides 3G/4G on Sao Tome island, with coverage in the capital city and along the main coastal road. Principe island has more limited service.

The islands' small size helps with coverage in populated areas, but the mountainous, forested interior of both islands has limited signal. The Obo National Park areas are largely offline. Very few international eSIM providers include Sao Tome and Principe. This remote destination's charm partly lies in its disconnected feel, and travelers should prepare for intermittent connectivity.

Practical Data Tips

  • Very few eSIM providers cover Sao Tome and Principe
  • The capital has the most reliable coverage on Sao Tome island
  • Principe has more limited connectivity than Sao Tome
  • Download all maps and guides offline before arriving
  • Hotel and resort Wi-Fi is likely your best internet option

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist

The mistakes that cost travelers in Sao Tome and Principe are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Sao Tome and Principe eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Choose your travel data line.

On iPhone, select your travel eSIM in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. Follow your provider's roaming and activation instructions. Choosing a data line does not by itself prevent charges on your home line.

  4. 4

Decide whether to keep your home line on.

You do not need to disable iMessage simply because you use a travel eSIM. Apple’s travel eSIM guidance says iMessage and FaceTime can continue using your home line while traveling. If you keep both lines active for home-number calls or SMS, your carrier may charge roaming fees. Check your carrier’s terms before leaving your home line on.

  5. 5

Download offline maps for Sao Tome and Principe.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.

Questions other travelers asked

Pulled from the real search queries that land people on this page. We keep adding to this as new questions about Sao Tome and Principe eSIMs come in.

Will my US, UK, or EU phone work with a Sao Tome and Principe eSIM?

Any unlocked iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most modern Samsung Galaxy phones bought in the US, Canada, UK, EU, or Australia support eSIM and will work on CST. The main exception is iPhones sold in mainland China: most use two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM, and Apple lists only a few recent models (such as the iPhone Air) that support eSIM there. Some models sold in Hong Kong and Macao also lack eSIM, so check for an Add eSIM option in Settings. If your device is unlocked and supports eSIM, the Sao Tome and Principe plans on this page will activate without any extra steps.

Do I need to remove my home SIM to use a Sao Tome and Principe eSIM?

No. The Sao Tome and Principe eSIM runs alongside your existing line. Keep your home number active for SMS verification codes, bank logins, and two-factor authentication, then set the travel eSIM as the data line. Both lines stay reachable, but only the eSIM uses data, so you avoid roaming fees while still receiving texts and calls from home.

Can I use tethering or a personal hotspot with these Sao Tome and Principe eSIMs?

Hotspot and tethering terms vary by provider and plan, and some unlimited plans limit or slow hotspot use. Where a plan card on this page shows a hotspot policy, it comes from that offer's source; where it says unverified, confirm with the provider before you buy. Carrier-direct plans bought inside Sao Tome and Principe occasionally block it.

What happens if I run out of data while traveling in Sao Tome and Principe?

Top up directly in your provider's app. With most Sao Tome and Principe eSIMs you can buy an extra 1 GB, 3 GB, or 5 GB top-up that activates immediately on the same eSIM profile. Roamless and Google Fi bill by the gigabyte, so they extend automatically. If you bought a fixed plan and prefer not to top up, you can also install a second eSIM from a different provider, since phones support multiple profiles.

Is 5G worth paying extra for in Sao Tome and Principe?

For most travelers, no. CST's 4G LTE in Sao Tome and Principe is fast enough for maps, messaging, photo backup, and HD video. Pay for 5G only if you are working remotely, uploading large video files, or hosting calls from a hotspot. The price-per-GB on this page already reflects what each provider charges for their highest available network.

Can I make voice calls or send SMS from a Sao Tome and Principe travel eSIM?

Travel eSIMs are data-only by design. To call or text in Sao Tome and Principe use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal, or Google Voice over the eSIM's data connection. Your home number stays active on its original SIM for SMS verification codes. If you need a local Sao Tome and Principe phone number for forms or bookings, you will need a local SIM or eSIM from a Sao Tome and Principe carrier rather than a data-only travel eSIM.

When does the validity timer start on a Sao Tome and Principe eSIM?

On almost every provider we track, the timer starts on activation, not installation. That means you can install the eSIM days before your trip while still on your home WiFi, then turn the line on the moment you land in Sao Tome and Principe. A few providers count from the first time the eSIM registers on a local network instead, which is functionally the same thing.

How fast can the eSIM connect when I arrive in Sao Tome and Principe?

If you installed the eSIM at home and switch the line on after landing, it should attach to CST within 1 to 2 minutes of landing once you exit airplane mode. If it does not connect, toggle airplane mode once or restart the phone. Make sure data roaming is enabled on the eSIM line, since many providers explicitly require it even though the eSIM is local.

Are eSIMs cheaper than carrier roaming for a trip to Sao Tome and Principe?

In almost every case, yes. Day passes from US carriers such as Verizon TravelPass and AT&T International Day Pass cost about $12 per day. A travel eSIM for Sao Tome and Principe usually costs $12-$22/GB, so a week-long trip can be 60 to 80 percent cheaper. Roaming wins only if you also need your home number to keep ringing while you travel.

How early can I buy and install a Sao Tome and Principe eSIM before my trip?

Most providers let you buy and install up to 30 days before departure, and some allow longer. Install on home WiFi to avoid a flaky activation later. The validity window only starts when you turn the line on, so installing early carries no penalty. Keep the activation QR code or the provider's app handy as backup in case you need to reinstall mid-trip.

How we built this page

Country plan prices come from stored supplier snapshots. The catalog contains different data amounts and validity periods. Provider ordering uses the unweighted average $/GB of fixed plans, or the PAYG rate; unlimited plans are excluded from that average. Check a plan’s data, validity and total price against your trip before buying.
