Idea in testingOur own eSIM · not yet available

What if it was just $5.00 a GB, everywhere?

We are considering a BetterSIM eSIM at one flat rate worldwide. No tiers, no bundles, no per-country price shopping, no volume discounts you never reach. The same $5.00 in Timor-Leste as in Fiji or Kenya.

Your 4 GB would cost$20.00($5.00/GB, credit never expires)

Straight answer: this would not be the cheapest option. The plans listed on this page are often less per GB, especially in Europe and Asia. It would be the simplest. Savings against Google Fi depend on usage, Bill Protection and speed needs.

How this would work

City-by-city connectivity in Timor-Leste

Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Dili

Arriving
Presidente Nicolau Lobato International (DIL) is a short ride from the capital; transfers are by taxi. The airport has 3G and limited 4G from Timor Telecom and Telemor. Very few international eSIM providers cover Timor-Leste, so verify before relying on one, and download offline maps and language tools before arrival.
On the subway and rail
Dili moves by microlets (shared minibuses) and taxis; there is no metro or rail. Coverage holds across the capital on Timor Telecom and Telemor, though speeds are limited compared with other Southeast Asian capitals. Outside Dili, expect little to no cellular signal on the mountain roads.
Free public WiFi
Hotels, cafes and the Timor Plaza mall provide WiFi, which is the most reliable backup for connectivity-dependent tasks given the slow cellular speeds. DIL airport has basic terminal WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the capital.
Coverage in the city
Timor Telecom and Telemor run 3G with limited 4G across Dili, the Cristo Rei statue headland, the waterfront and the Timor Plaza. Speeds are modest. Beyond the capital, the roads to Maubisse, Baucau and the eastern districts often have no signal at all, so plan for an offline experience outside town.
If you prefer a local SIM
Timor Telecom and Telemor sell SIMs at DIL and in Dili. Critically, most regional and global travel eSIM plans exclude Timor-Leste, so a local SIM is usually the only reliable option. Verify any eSIM covers the country specifically before depending on it.

Local Network Insights

Curated tips to help you stay connected in Timor-Leste.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Timor-Leste to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Installing the eSIM at home means you can switch it on and connect as soon as you land.

Connectivity Overview

What to expect for mobile connectivity in Timor-Leste.

Timor-Leste (East Timor) is one of the world's youngest nations and one of the least connected countries in Southeast Asia. Timor Telecom and Telemor are the two main carriers, offering 3G and limited 4G service primarily in the capital Dili. Within Dili, you can expect basic connectivity for messaging, navigation, and light browsing, though speeds are generally slower than what travelers experience elsewhere in the region.

Outside Dili, infrastructure drops off sharply. Mountain roads to destinations like Maubisse, Baucau, and the eastern districts often have no cellular coverage at all. The rugged terrain and limited infrastructure investment mean that much of the country remains a genuinely offline travel experience.

Very few international eSIM providers include Timor-Leste in their coverage maps. Travelers should verify explicitly that their chosen eSIM plan supports this destination, and should prepare for significant periods without connectivity. Offline maps, downloaded phrasebooks for Tetum and Portuguese, and pre-saved travel documents are essential.

Practical Data Tips

  • Verify your eSIM provider explicitly covers Timor-Leste - many Southeast Asia plans do not include it
  • Download offline maps, language tools, and all travel documents before arriving
  • Dili has basic 3G/4G coverage but speeds are limited compared to other Southeast Asian capitals
  • Outside Dili, expect little to no cellular coverage - plan for an offline experience
  • Hotel Wi-Fi in Dili is your most reliable backup for connectivity-dependent tasks

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist

The mistakes that cost travelers in Timor-Leste are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Timor-Leste eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Choose your travel data line.

On iPhone, select your travel eSIM in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. Follow your provider's roaming and activation instructions. Choosing a data line does not by itself prevent charges on your home line.

  4. 4

Decide whether to keep your home line on.

You do not need to disable iMessage simply because you use a travel eSIM. Apple’s travel eSIM guidance says iMessage and FaceTime can continue using your home line while traveling. If you keep both lines active for home-number calls or SMS, your carrier may charge roaming fees. Check your carrier’s terms before leaving your home line on.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Timor-Leste.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.

Questions other travelers asked

Pulled from the real search queries that land people on this page. We keep adding to this as new questions about Timor-Leste eSIMs come in.

Will my US, UK, or EU phone work with a Timor-Leste eSIM?

Any unlocked iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most modern Samsung Galaxy phones bought in the US, Canada, UK, EU, or Australia support eSIM and will work on Timor Telecom and Telemor. The main exception is iPhones sold in mainland China: most use two physical SIM slots instead of eSIM, and Apple lists only a few recent models (such as the iPhone Air) that support eSIM there. Some models sold in Hong Kong and Macao also lack eSIM, so check for an Add eSIM option in Settings. If your device is unlocked and supports eSIM, the Timor-Leste plans on this page will activate without any extra steps.

Do I need to remove my home SIM to use a Timor-Leste eSIM?

No. The Timor-Leste eSIM runs alongside your existing line. Keep your home number active for SMS verification codes, bank logins, and two-factor authentication, then set the travel eSIM as the data line. Both lines stay reachable, but only the eSIM uses data, so you avoid roaming fees while still receiving texts and calls from home.

Can I use tethering or a personal hotspot with these Timor-Leste eSIMs?

Hotspot and tethering terms vary by provider and plan, and some unlimited plans limit or slow hotspot use. Where a plan card on this page shows a hotspot policy, it comes from that offer's source; where it says unverified, confirm with the provider before you buy. Carrier-direct plans bought inside Timor-Leste occasionally block it.

What happens if I run out of data while traveling in Timor-Leste?

Top up directly in your provider's app. With most Timor-Leste eSIMs you can buy an extra 1 GB, 3 GB, or 5 GB top-up that activates immediately on the same eSIM profile. Roamless and Google Fi bill by the gigabyte, so they extend automatically. If you bought a fixed plan and prefer not to top up, you can also install a second eSIM from a different provider, since phones support multiple profiles.

Is 5G worth paying extra for in Timor-Leste?

For most travelers, no. Timor Telecom and Telemor's 4G LTE in Timor-Leste is fast enough for maps, messaging, photo backup, and HD video. Pay for 5G only if you are working remotely, uploading large video files, or hosting calls from a hotspot. The price-per-GB on this page already reflects what each provider charges for their highest available network.

Can I make voice calls or send SMS from a Timor-Leste travel eSIM?

Travel eSIMs are data-only by design. To call or text in Timor-Leste use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal, or Google Voice over the eSIM's data connection. Your home number stays active on its original SIM for SMS verification codes. If you need a local Timor-Leste phone number for forms or bookings, you will need a local SIM or eSIM from a Timor-Leste carrier rather than a data-only travel eSIM.

When does the validity timer start on a Timor-Leste eSIM?

On almost every provider we track, the timer starts on activation, not installation. That means you can install the eSIM days before your trip while still on your home WiFi, then turn the line on the moment you land in Timor-Leste. A few providers count from the first time the eSIM registers on a local network instead, which is functionally the same thing.

How fast can the eSIM connect when I arrive in Timor-Leste?

If you installed the eSIM at home and switch the line on after landing, it should attach to Timor Telecom within 1 to 2 minutes of landing once you exit airplane mode. If it does not connect, toggle airplane mode once or restart the phone. Make sure data roaming is enabled on the eSIM line, since many providers explicitly require it even though the eSIM is local.

Are eSIMs cheaper than carrier roaming for a trip to Timor-Leste?

In almost every case, yes. Day passes from US carriers such as Verizon TravelPass and AT&T International Day Pass cost about $12 per day. A travel eSIM for Timor-Leste usually costs $3-$20/GB, so a week-long trip can be 60 to 80 percent cheaper. Roaming wins only if you also need your home number to keep ringing while you travel.

How early can I buy and install a Timor-Leste eSIM before my trip?

Most providers let you buy and install up to 30 days before departure, and some allow longer. Install on home WiFi to avoid a flaky activation later. The validity window only starts when you turn the line on, so installing early carries no penalty. Keep the activation QR code or the provider's app handy as backup in case you need to reinstall mid-trip.

Reports from travelers

Short, verified notes from people who actually used these plans in Timor-Leste. Not testimonials, not paid placements.

We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Timor-Leste recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.

How we built this page

Country plan prices come from stored supplier snapshots. The catalog contains different data amounts and validity periods. Provider ordering uses the unweighted average $/GB of fixed plans, or the PAYG rate; unlimited plans are excluded from that average. Check a plan’s data, validity and total price against your trip before buying.
