Smart Axiata, Cellcard and Metfone all run 4G with 5G appearing across central Phnom Penh, the riverside and the BKK1 expat district. Smart has the widest 4G footprint nationally and is the standard partner for most travel eSIM providers.
Siem Reap town and the main Angkor temples (Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm) are well covered by all three carriers. The deeper jungle temples like Beng Mealea, Banteay Srei and Koh Ker drop signal at the more remote stops.
Sihanoukville city is covered well; Otres Beach and the Sokha resort strip hold signal. Off-island resorts on Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem have signal from at least Smart; the quieter beaches on each island thin out.
Battambang city and the bamboo train area are fully covered. Floating villages on the Tonle Sap (Kampong Phluk, Mechrey) have signal at the embarkation points; the lake interior thins out, especially during the dry season when villages migrate.
The major roads (NR48, NR55) have intermittent signal. The deeper jungle, the gibbon and elephant sanctuaries and the longer trekking routes are genuinely offline; treat the Cardamoms as a no-signal multi-day region.
Sen Monorom town has functional 4G. The elephant sanctuaries (Elephant Valley Project, Mondulkiri Project) have signal at the office; deeper into the forest and at Bou Sra waterfall, coverage drops on every carrier.
Phnom Penh
- Arriving
- Phnom Penh International (PNH) is about 10 km from the centre, with the new Techo International Airport opening further out. Transfers are by taxi, Grab, the PassApp ride-hail or a tuk-tuk. All have full 4G/5G from Smart, Cellcard and Metfone. Cambodia has some of the cheapest mobile data in Asia, so a generous allowance costs very little.
- On the subway and rail
- Phnom Penh has no metro or urban rail; the city moves by tuk-tuk (both the trailer type and the app-booked PassApp and Grab tuk-tuks), motodop motorbike taxis and a limited city bus network. The ride apps need data and are the easiest way around. Coverage holds across the riverside and the central districts throughout.
- Free public WiFi
- The malls leave WiFi open: Aeon Mall Phnom Penh and Aeon Mall Sen Sok City. Cafes across BKK1 and along the Sisowath Quay riverside offer WiFi. PNH airport has free terminal WiFi. Hotels and hostels provide guest WiFi as standard, common across the city.
- Coverage in the city
- Smart Axiata has the widest footprint, with Cellcard and Metfone present. The riverside, the Royal Palace, the BKK1 district, the Central Market and the Russian Market are all covered. Data is extremely cheap here, so streaming and navigation are not a budget concern. The ride apps hold signal across the central districts.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Smart, Cellcard and Metfone have shops at PNH and across the city, and Cambodia requires passport registration at the point of sale. Local data is exceptionally cheap. That said, local eSIM support is limited, so an international travel eSIM with Cambodia coverage is usually the simplest path for visitors.
Siem Reap
- Arriving
- The new Siem Reap-Angkor International (SAI) opened in 2023 about 40 km east of town, replacing the old airport near the temples. Transfers are by taxi, Grab or tuk-tuk and take around 50 minutes. The airport has full 4G from Smart, Cellcard and Metfone. Have data ready for the Angkor ticketing and the temple-tour logistics.
- On the subway and rail
- Siem Reap is toured almost entirely by tuk-tuk, which is the classic way to circuit the Angkor temples, plus bicycles and the Grab and PassApp ride apps. There is no metro or rail. Coverage holds across the town and the main temple loop; the more remote temples are where signal thins.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels, hostels and the cafes around Pub Street and the Old Market provide WiFi. The Angkor ticket centre and the larger restaurants offer WiFi. SAI airport has free terminal WiFi. Connectivity is easy in town, with a working eSIM covering the temple circuits.
