CSL, 3HK, SmarTone and China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) all run dense 5G across Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. CSL has the widest 5G availability; SmarTone often leads on raw speed in office districts.
The MTR has cell coverage on every line including the deep cross-harbour tunnels (Tsuen Wan Line under Victoria Harbour, East Rail Line through the harbour). The Western Harbour Crossing, Eastern Harbour Crossing and the Cross-Harbour Tunnel all keep signal end to end.
Sha Tin, Tai Po, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long are all densely covered. Sai Kung town has full 4G/5G; the country parks and the MacLehose Trail have signal at the visitor centres and main viewpoints but drop in the deeper bays.
Tung Chung, Disneyland, the cable car corridor to Ngong Ping and the Big Buddha are all fully covered. Lamma, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau ferry-pier villages have signal; quieter trails on Lamma and the Lantau Peak hike see brief drops.
The airport, the Airport Express train and the SkyPier ferry terminal to Macau and mainland China are all fully covered. Cell signal works through the Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Mun bridge tunnels on the way in.
The major hiking routes (Dragon's Back, the MacLehose Trail, the Wilson Trail) have signal at trailheads and viewpoints. The deeper bays on the Sai Kung peninsula and the longer Lantau Trail sections occasionally drop signal, but full offline stretches are rare.
Hong Kong Island and Central

- Hong Kong International (HKG) at Chek Lap Kok has both terminals fully covered by CSL, 3HK, SmarTone and CMHK 5G. Airport Express train reaches Central in 24 minutes with continuous signal including the Tsing Ma Bridge tunnels. Taxis from the airport are reliable. Free SIM cards from "Hong Kong Free WiFi" are not really worth it - the eSIM is faster to activate.

- MTR has full cell coverage on every line including the deep Cross-Harbour Tunnels (Tsuen Wan Line under Victoria Harbour, East Rail Line at Hung Hom). The Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour stays connected throughout. The Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak keeps signal at the lower stations and the summit observation tower. Hong Kong Tramways (the historic "Ding Ding" double-deckers) on Hong Kong Island keep signal. Citybus and KMB buses are universally covered.

- Wi-Fi.HK is the government free public WiFi network at 700+ locations including all MTR stations, public libraries, parks (Victoria Park, Kowloon Park), the Star Ferry piers and the Avenue of Stars - no registration. Major malls (IFC, Pacific Place, Times Square, Harbour City) have open guest WiFi. PMQ (creative arts hub) and Tai Kwun (former police station turned cultural centre) both have open WiFi. The airport gives unlimited free.

- CSL has the widest 5G availability across Hong Kong Island. SmarTone often leads on raw 5G speeds, particularly in the Central/Admiralty financial district and at the Peak. 3HK is highly competitive citywide including in the Wan Chai and Causeway Bay shopping/nightlife corridors. CMHK (China Mobile Hong Kong) covers the basics well. Indoor coverage at IFC, the Lippo Centre, the new West Kowloon Cultural District M+ museum and across all the major hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Peninsula) is excellent. The Big Buddha at Po Lin Monastery on Lantau via the cable car has solid signal.

- CSL, 3HK, SmarTone and CMHK all sell tourist SIMs at the airport arrivals hall - typically HK$80-150 for 5-15 GB over 7-30 days. Convenience stores throughout the city (7-Eleven, Circle K) stock prepaid SIMs (Birdie, Club Sim, Singpass options). 1010 (CSL's flagship brand) has stores in IFC Mall and Pacific Place. No registration required for prepaid plans up to a low threshold.
Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok)

- Same as Hong Kong Island - HKIA via Airport Express terminates at Kowloon Station (5-minute taxi to TST or 10 minutes by MTR Tung Chung Line transfer). The free hotel shuttle bus from Kowloon Station to most TST and Mong Kok hotels keeps signal end-to-end. Airport Express seats are an upgrade for Hong Kong Park views over Kai Tak.
- On the subway and rail
- MTR Kwun Tong Line, Tsuen Wan Line, East Rail Line and the West Rail Line all serve Kowloon - every station and tunnel has cell signal including the Cross-Harbour Tunnels. The Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central is the iconic crossing with full signal throughout. KMB buses serving Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, Sham Shui Po keep continuous signal. The Light Rail in the New Territories (Yuen Long, Tuen Mun) is also covered.

SmarTone has reliable indoor coverage in the older Yau Ma Tei tenement buildings and the deeper basement levels of the Chungking Mansions. 3HK leads in the Mong Kok pedestrian zones. CMHK is competitive throughout. Coverage at Ocean Terminal cruise pier, the M+ museum at West Kowloon Cultural District, and the Symphony of Lights waterfront all maintain dense signal. The Wong Tai Sin Temple and the Sik Sik Yuen complex have full 5G.
