Telkomsel has the widest 5G across Java's biggest cities, with Indosat and XL close behind in the business districts. Coverage holds across the elevated Jabodetabek toll roads and the commuter rail loop.
Telkomsel and Indosat both run 5G across the southern tourist belt. Rice-paddy back roads between Ubud and Tegallalang and the Sidemen valley see brief signal drops; all three carriers usually recover within a kilometre.
Strong 4G across Yogyakarta, Borobudur, Prambanan and the Solo (Surakarta) cultural axis. Telkomsel is the broadest choice for day-trips out to Mount Merapi.
Senggigi, Kuta Lombok and Gili Trawangan are well covered by Telkomsel and Indosat. Gili Meno and Gili Air thin out to Telkomsel-only on the quieter sides of the islands.
Cities hold solid 4G across all carriers. Jungle access roads toward Bukit Lawang and the long drive around Lake Toba see real gaps; Telkomsel is the most usable.
Telkomsel is often the only operating carrier in the eastern archipelago. Even then, expect intermittent service on liveaboards and on the smaller islands; treat data as a bonus, not a guarantee.
Bali (Denpasar, Ubud, Seminyak)
- Arriving
- Ngurah Rai International (DPS) at Denpasar serves all of Bali - international and domestic in one airport. Full 4G/5G from Telkomsel, Indosat and XL Axiata throughout terminals. A travel eSIM connects on the tarmac. Pre-arranged hotel transfers, GrabCar, GoCar or Bluebird taxi at the official taxi counter; ignore touts. Note: Bali charges a tourist levy (IDR 150,000) collected via the LoveBali app or kiosks at arrivals - having data ready makes this faster.

- Bali has no metro or rail - everything is by motorbike, GoCar, GrabCar or hired driver. The new Kuta-Sanur LRT (planned for 2027) is the first attempted rail. Trans Sarbagita and Trans Metro Dewata buses connect Denpasar, Sanur and Kuta - they keep signal throughout. Motorbike rental is the local norm; install Gojek and Grab for affordable rides. Toll roads (Bali Mandara) hold continuous 4G/5G; backroads through rice paddies thin briefly between cells.

- WiFi is universal at cafes, warungs, restaurants, hotels and co-working spaces (Outpost, Dojo, Tropical Nomad in Canggu and Ubud). Most are open or have the password printed on the menu. Beach clubs (La Brisa, Finns, Atlas, Karma) all offer guest WiFi. Public WiFi at Denpasar airport is 1 hour free. The digital-nomad cafe scene in Canggu and Ubud has effectively made Bali a "remote work covered everywhere" destination.
- Coverage in the city
- Telkomsel has the widest 4G/5G across Bali including the rice-paddy backroads of Ubud and Tegallalang, the Sidemen valley and the route up to Mt. Batur sunrise treks. Indosat is competitive in the south (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua) and along the Bypass corridor. XL Axiata covers tourist areas well but thins out faster on the northern coast (Lovina) and east (Amed). Coverage at Tanah Lot, Uluwatu Temple and the Tirta Empul holy springs is solid. The Sidemen valley and Munduk waterfall hikes drop briefly into the deeper jungle but recover at the lodges.

- Telkomsel, Indosat and XL kiosks throughout Denpasar Airport arrivals - tourist packs from IDR 100,000 with multiple GBs. Indomaret and Alfamart convenience stores in every neighbourhood sell prepaid starter packs and top-ups. Passport ID required for local SIM activation. Many digital nomads use eSIMs to avoid the queue.
Jakarta
- Arriving
- Soekarno-Hatta International (CGK) has 3 terminals (T1, T2, T3 + the new T3 Ultimate for international). All have full 5G from Telkomsel, Indosat and XL. The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Rail Link connects to Manggarai and BNI City stations in central Jakarta in 45 minutes; signal holds throughout. DAMRI airport buses run to multiple city zones. GrabCar and GoCar are widely available.
- On the subway and rail
- Jakarta MRT (the single North-South line from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI, opened 2019) has cellular coverage on all underground stretches - all three carriers run 4G/5G at depth. The East-West MRT extension is under construction. Jakarta LRT serves Velodrome and the Greater Jakarta region. KRL Commuterline trains keep signal. TransJakarta BRT (the largest BRT in the world by route length) is continuously connected on all 13 corridors. The new Cipali toll road and the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail keep signal throughout.
- Free public WiFi
- JakWiFi (Jakarta Smart City WiFi) covers many transit hubs, public parks (Taman Suropati, Lapangan Banteng), the Monas monument grounds and the Old Town (Kota Tua) with no registration needed. Major malls (Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, Plaza Senayan, Pacific Place) have open guest WiFi. CGK airport gives 4 hours free.
- Coverage in the city
- Telkomsel has the densest 5G across Jakarta - particularly strong in Sudirman, Thamrin, Kuningan and the Senayan/SCBD business districts. Indosat is highly competitive in Menteng, Kemang and South Jakarta. XL is solid through the central corridor but thinner in suburban Tangerang and Bekasi. Coverage holds well at Kota Tua (Old Batavia), the National Monument (Monas) and across the Ancol beach/Dufan amusement complex. Heavy traffic in central Jakarta can mean cell sites get congested - all three carriers can slow at rush hour.

- Telkomsel, Indosat and XL booths at CGK arrivals (all 3 terminals). Indomaret, Alfamart and Circle K convenience stores throughout the city stock prepaid SIMs. Passport plus a simple registration form at point of sale. Smartfren, the smaller fourth carrier, is also an option for budget data plans.
Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and XL Axiata power Indonesia with 4G across Java and Bali, while island hopping to Komodo or Raja Ampat can dip to 3G. An eSIM ensures you stay online for ride-hailing and ferry schedules right after landing.
Indonesia's archipelago of 17,000+ islands presents varied connectivity for eSIM travelers. Telkomsel dominates with the widest coverage, followed by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and XL Axiata.
