Freetown
- Arriving
- Lungi International (FNA) is across the estuary from Freetown, reached by a water taxi, ferry or hovercraft; transfers then continue by taxi. The airport has 3G/4G from Orange and Africell. Freetown is the capital. Power outages affect towers, so carry a portable charger, and download maps offline.
- On the subway and rail
- Freetown moves by poda-poda minibuses, shared taxis and the new ferry across the estuary to the airport; there is no metro. Coverage holds across the centre and the Lumley Beach strip, though power cuts can interrupt it. The peninsula beaches south of town are covered at the main resorts.
- Free public WiFi
- Hotels, the beach resorts and the larger restaurants provide WiFi, a useful backup during outages. FNA airport has basic WiFi. Connectivity is concentrated in the capital and along the beach strip.
- Coverage in the city
- Orange and Africell both run 3G/4G across central Freetown and the Lumley Beach strip, with Orange slightly wider. The peninsula beaches (River No. 2, Tokeh) are covered at the resorts. Bo, Kenema and Makeni have basic service; Tiwai Island and the Outamba-Kilimi park are largely offline.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Orange and Africell sell SIMs at Lungi and in Freetown, with Orange slightly wider. Very few international eSIM providers cover Sierra Leone, so a local Orange SIM is the practical option; carry a power bank given the grid.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Sierra Leone to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Sierra Leone has basic mobile connectivity focused on Freetown. Orange and Africell provide 3G/4G service in the capital and basic 2G/3G in Bo, Kenema, and Makeni. Freetown's central areas and the popular Lumley Beach strip have functional coverage for messaging and basic browsing.
The interior and rural areas have very limited coverage. The Outamba-Kilimi National Park, Tiwai Island, and Banana Islands have minimal to no cellular service. Sierra Leone's post-conflict infrastructure continues to develop, but connectivity outside Freetown remains basic. Few international eSIM providers include Sierra Leone.

- 1
Buy and install at home on WiFi.
Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Sierra Leone eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.
- 2
Screenshot your current APN before you swap.
If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.
- 3
Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.
Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.
- 4
Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.
Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.
- 5
Download offline maps for Sierra Leone.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.
- 6
Activate at the airport, not before.
Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.
We are building this section from real, verified traveler submissions rather than stock testimonials, so it stays empty until we have notes we can stand behind. If you have used an eSIM in Sierra Leone recently, a one-paragraph note on what worked (and what did not) helps the next traveler.
