Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone all run dense 5G across central Taipei, Xinyi, Da'an and Ximending. The Taipei MRT has cell coverage on all lines including the Tamsui-Xinyi and Songshan-Xindian deep stations.
Southern Taiwan's biggest cities have full 5G across the harbour districts, Lotus Pond and the historic Tainan old town. The Kaohsiung MRT and the THSR (Taiwan High Speed Rail) corridor up to Taipei stay live throughout.
Hualien city and the Taroko visitor centre are well covered. The deeper gorge trails (Zhuilu Old Trail, Eternal Spring Shrine path) and the long coastal drives toward Taitung see brief drops; Chunghwa is the most consistent.
Sun Moon Lake resorts, Puli and the lakeside bike trail are fully covered. The Alishan Forest Recreation Area has signal at the visitor centre and the main viewpoints; deeper trail interiors and Yushan (Mt. Jade) climbs thin out.
The main islands (Magong on Penghu, Kinmen city, Nangan on Matsu) have full 4G/5G via Chunghwa. Smaller outlying islets and the inter-island ferry routes occasionally drop signal on the longer crossings.
The Yangmingshan National Park visitor centre and the Beitou hot-spring valley are well covered. Trails to Mt. Qixing and the volcanic sulphur vents have signal at the main observation areas; longer hikes see brief drops in the deeper forest.
Taipei
- Arriving
- Taoyuan International (TPE) is 40 km west of central Taipei. The Taoyuan Airport MRT (TYMRT) Purple Line connects to Taipei Main Station in 38 minutes (Express) or 52 minutes (Commuter); both have continuous cell signal including the underground stretches. Songshan Airport (TSA) is the small downtown airport for cross-strait flights to Shanghai/Beijing and some Tokyo/Seoul routes - directly on Taipei Metro Brown Line.
- On the subway and rail
- Taipei Metro (Brown, Red, Green, Blue, Orange lines plus Taoyuan Airport Line) has full 4G/5G coverage on every underground station and tunnel - Chunghwa, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone all run signal at depth. The new Wanda-Zhonghe-Shulin Line under construction will have built-in cell coverage. Taipei buses are continuously connected. The Maokong Gondola from Taipei Zoo up to the tea plantations stays connected throughout. THSR (Taiwan High Speed Rail) from Taipei to Kaohsiung in 2 hours stays covered the whole route.
- Free public WiFi
- iTaiwan WiFi is the government public network covering all MRT stations, public libraries, government buildings, Taipei Main Station and most tourist attractions - one-time registration with passport ID at any visitor centre or online. Taipei Free WiFi (city-deployed) covers Ximending pedestrian zone, Xinyi shopping district, Taipei 101, Da'an Forest Park and the Datong Old Town. Cafes universally have open WiFi (Cama, Louisa, Starbucks). TPE airport free WiFi is unlimited.
- Coverage in the city
- Chunghwa Telecom (the incumbent state carrier) has the densest 5G across Taipei - particularly strong indoor coverage at Taipei 101, the older buildings of Da'an and the night-market lanes (Shilin, Raohe, Ningxia). Taiwan Mobile is highly competitive across Xinyi and the Da'an business district. Far EasTone is solid throughout. Coverage at Yangmingshan National Park visitor centre, the Beitou Hot Springs and the Maokong tea plantation viewpoint is strong on all three carriers. The narrow Jiufen and Pingxi old-street lanes (popular for the Spirited Away cliffside aesthetic) hold signal at the main streets but thin briefly in deeper alleys.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone all have prominent stores at TPE arrivals - tourist plans from NT$300 for 5 days unlimited (about $10). Convenience stores citywide (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK Mart) sell prepaid SIMs. Passport required for activation. The Taipei 101 mall and Mitsui Outlet at Linkou both have carrier flagship stores.
Kaohsiung
- Arriving
- Kaohsiung International (KHH) is the main southern Taiwan airport. The Kaohsiung MRT Red Line connects to Formosa Boulevard Station (the Dome of Light interchange) in 15 minutes; continuous cellular signal. Most international arrivals into KHH are from Asian regional routes (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Bangkok). The THSR from Taipei to Zuoying takes 1h 40m; transfer to Kaohsiung Metro at Zuoying.
- On the subway and rail
- Kaohsiung MRT (Red and Orange lines, plus the new Yellow Line under construction) has full cell coverage on every underground station including the dazzling Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard. The Kaohsiung Light Rail (LRT C Line) loops the Asia New Bay Area and the historic Yancheng district - continuous signal. The historic Hamasen and the Cijin Island ferry stay connected. Buses citywide are well covered.
- Free public WiFi
- iTaiwan WiFi covers all Kaohsiung MRT stations, public buildings, the Pier-2 Art Center, the Love River boardwalk and the Liuhe Tourist Night Market. The Kaohsiung Visitor Information Center provides on-the-spot iTaiwan registration. Hotels and cafes universally have open guest WiFi. Cijin Island public WiFi covers the main tourist strip near the beach.
- Coverage in the city
- All three Taiwanese carriers run 5G across central Kaohsiung. Chunghwa is particularly strong in the Lotus Pond area (the dragon and tiger pagodas), the Liuhe night market and the harbour-side Pier-2. Taiwan Mobile leads at Dream Mall and the Asia New Bay Area development. Far EasTone is solid throughout. The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center is well covered. Coverage on the ferry to Cijin Island stays strong close to mainland and at the Cijin Old Street tourist strip.
- If you prefer a local SIM
- Same options as Taipei - Chunghwa, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone all at KHH arrivals. Convenience stores throughout the city stock prepaid SIMs. Plans from NT$300 with unlimited data over 3-5 days are very popular for combined Taipei-Kaohsiung trips on THSR.
Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Taiwan to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.
Taiwan offers excellent mobile connectivity with three major carriers - Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone - providing widespread 5G and 4G coverage. Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan all have strong 5G availability, while 4G reaches across most of the island including smaller cities and popular tourist destinations like Jiufen, Sun Moon Lake, and Kenting.
Taiwan has no internet restrictions whatsoever. All global services, social media platforms, and messaging apps work freely. The country is also one of the most tech-forward destinations in Asia, with excellent public Wi-Fi infrastructure and widespread digital payment adoption.
Mountainous interior areas and remote sections of the east coast (Taroko Gorge, Hualien to Taitung highway) may experience weaker signals, but the main travel routes and scenic viewpoints generally maintain usable coverage. eSIM support from international providers is excellent, making Taiwan one of the easiest Asian destinations for digital connectivity.
