Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Vietnam has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang
Excellent

Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone all run dense 4G/5G across the three biggest cities. Viettel has the widest 5G footprint nationally and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers.

Central Coast Tourist Corridor (Hoi An, Nha Trang, Mui Ne)
Strong

Reliable 4G everywhere along the beach corridor, with 5G appearing in central Nha Trang and Da Nang. Viettel and Mobifone are the most consistent options in the resort towns.

Mekong Delta
Good

Can Tho, Cai Be and the main tourist stops are well covered by all three carriers. Smaller settlements along the smaller branches of the river rely on Viettel for usable signal.

Northern Mountains (Sapa, Ha Giang Loop)
Variable

Town centres in Sapa, Bac Ha and Dong Van hold a signal, but remote mountain passes on the Ha Giang loop drop coverage entirely even on Viettel. Download offline maps before riding.

Phu Quoc Island
Good

Duong Dong and the southern resort coast are covered by all three carriers. Northern beaches and the An Thoi archipelago tail off to Viettel-only territory.

Central Highlands (Da Lat, Buon Ma Thuot)
Good

Town centres have solid 4G across all carriers. Coffee-plantation back roads and the Bidoup-Nui Ba forest stretches lose signal between villages.

City-by-city connectivity in Vietnam
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Ho Chi Minh City

Arriving
Tan Son Nhat International (SGN), 8 km from District 1. Phone service is live across both terminals. Bus 109 to Ben Thanh and Grab cars both run on uninterrupted signal during the drive in.
On the subway and rail
Metro Line 1 (Bến Thành to Suối Tiên) finally opened at the end of 2024 and has cell signal throughout. Buses are the primary public transport elsewhere and keep continuous coverage. Most travelers rely on Grab motorbikes and cars for getting around.
Free public WiFi
District 1 has municipal free WiFi at several public spots around Nguyễn Huệ walking street and Ben Thanh Market, though it is slow and inconsistent. The chains Highlands Coffee, The Coffee House, and Phuc Long all run dependable in-store WiFi, usually with the password printed on the receipt or visible behind the bar.
Coverage in the city
Viettel, Mobifone, and Vinaphone all have 4G/5G across central districts (D1, D3, D5, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan). Viettel has by far the widest network and is the default for travel eSIM providers. Coverage stays strong in the airport-Saigon corridor and out to popular day-trip destinations like Cu Chi Tunnels.
If you prefer a local SIM
Viettel and Mobifone counters at SGN arrivals sell tourist SIMs for around $5 covering 30 days of unlimited data. This is among the cheapest places in the world to buy a local tourist SIM. FPT Shop and Viettel stores citywide are the alternative once you are in town.

Hanoi

Arriving
Noi Bai International (HAN), 30 km north of the Old Quarter. Reception is steady across both terminals end to end. The Vietnam Airlines bus (86), public buses (7, 17), Grab cars, and taxis all stay online on the airport-Hanoi route. The drive in takes 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.
On the subway and rail
Hanoi Metro Line 2A (Cat Linh to Yen Nghia) opened in late 2021 and has cell signal throughout its elevated and underground stretches. Most tourists rely on Grab cars and motorbikes for getting around, which keep continuous signal. Public buses cover the city extensively. Metro Line 3 (Nhon - Hanoi Station) is under construction with partial opening in 2025.
Free public WiFi
Hoan Kiem Lake and the surrounding Old Quarter have municipal free WiFi at several public spots, particularly around the lake promenade and Dong Xuan Market. Cafes around Ta Hien street, the Egg Coffee shops, and the French Quarter all offer in-store WiFi; codes are usually written on the menu, taped to the espresso machine, or supplied when you order.
Coverage in the city
Viettel, Mobifone, and Vinaphone all have 4G/5G across the Old Quarter, French Quarter, Tay Ho (West Lake), and Long Bien districts. Viettel has the widest network in Vietnam generally and is the default partner for most travel eSIM providers. Coverage stays strong on the road out to Ha Long Bay, Tam Coc, and Ninh Binh, with occasional drops in karst-mountain tunnels.
If you prefer a local SIM
Viettel and Mobifone counters at HAN arrivals sell tourist SIMs for $4-5 covering 30 days of unlimited data, identical pricing to Ho Chi Minh City. FPT Shop locations citywide are the alternative if you are already in town. Among the cheapest places in the world to buy a local tourist SIM.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Vietnam.

Grab an eSIM before you arrive in Vietnam to skip local SIM queues. Most urban areas offer 4G or better, while rural regions can slow down, so keep offline maps handy. Activating the eSIM in advance ensures you are connected the moment you clear customs.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Vietnam.

Vietnam has a rapidly growing mobile network led by three major carriers - Viettel, Mobifone, and Vinaphone. 4G coverage is available in all major cities including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang, while 5G is being rolled out in select urban areas. The country's main tourist corridor from north to south is well covered, making it easy to stay connected while traveling between popular destinations.

Data costs in Vietnam are among the most affordable in Southeast Asia, and eSIM support is growing as more international providers add Vietnam to their coverage maps. Rural and mountainous areas in the north (like Sapa and Ha Giang) may have weaker or intermittent coverage, but the main towns and viewpoints in these regions generally have at least basic 4G.

Vietnam does occasionally restrict access to certain websites, but major services like Google, WhatsApp, and social media platforms generally work without issues for travelers.

Practical Data Tips
  • Download offline maps for northern mountain routes like the Ha Giang loop where coverage can be spotty
  • Data is very affordable - budget eSIM plans for Vietnam offer excellent value for money
  • Coverage on popular tourist routes (Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, Hue to Hoi An) is reliable
  • Grab is the main ride-hailing app and works well with mobile data across all major cities
  • Activate your eSIM before arriving since airport Wi-Fi can be slow for initial setup

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Vietnam are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Vietnam eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Vietnam.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.

Pricing on this page is pulled live from our database and refreshed every four hours. Coverage notes are sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners. Provider rankings are determined by price-per-gigabyte and plan flexibility, not by who pays the largest commission.
